Evolution Robotics names VP
Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics announced that it has named a new VP and GM of the company's Retail Solutions Group. Jeffrey B. Sakuguchi has been named Vice President and General Manager of the company's Retail Solutions Group, overseeing the company's loss prevention solutions. Sakuguchi joins from McKinsey & Company and Accenture.

Qualstar Ships Tape Library
Simi Valley-based Qualstar has shipped a new tape library solution. Qualstar's TLS and RLS-Series tape libraries now support Quantum SDLT 600 tape drives. The Quantum DLT drives allow Qualstar's automated tape libraries to support up to 300 gigabytes of capacity per tape. The technology allows for bouth double the capacity and data rate of existing generation of drives.

Xap Partners For College
Culver City-based Xap Corporation and electronic capture company Hershey Systems announced the two companies have formed a partnership. The two companies will combine their products and services for the admissions applicaitons process for colleges and universities. The companies will establish a standard interchange format and methodology to integrate Xap's Control Center and Hershey's software suite, which should allow colleges to electronically capture, management, and store admissions applica (More info...)

USC Gets $22M From Venture Capitalist
Los Angeles-based USC announced that Mark A. Stevens, a general partner at the venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, and his wife Mary have given $22M to the school--the second largest in the USC Viterbi Engineering School's fundraising initiative. The gifts follows Andrew and Erna Viterbi's $52M gift in March which renamed the school the USC Viterbi Engineering school. Gordon Moore Gives $25.4M to Caltech
Pasadena-based Caltech announced that it has been awarded a $25.4M grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to create an initiative for nanoscale systems. The Nanoscale Systems Initiative will focus on creating extremely tiny devices for electronic systems. The school had founded the Kavli Naonscience Institute earlier this year with a $7.5M grant.
