AMCC Appoints President and CEO
San Diego-based AMCC announced that it has named Kambiz Hooshmand as President and CEO, as well as a member of the board of directors. Former Chairman, President, and CEO David M. Rickey is retiring effective March 21st but will work with the incoming president to transition the business. According to the company, independent director Cesar Cesaratto will assume the chairman position. Hooshmand joins from Cisco Systems, where he was VP and GM of Cisco's Optical and Broadband Transport group. AMC (More info...)

Akonix Adds Microsoft Office Live Communications Server Support
San Diego-based Akonix rolled out new support for Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 this week, as the instant messaging firewall software firm looks to secure additional instant messaging protocols. Akonix said that it will support the newly released Microsoft instant messaging product. Akonix provides tools which allow companies to manage public and private instant messaging traffic, including regulatory logging and archiving and filtering. Arkeia Upgrades Backup Software
San Diego-based Arkeia said this week that it has upgraded its Arkeia Server Backup software and swizzled its pricing model. The upgraded software targets SMB and Linux-based organizations and provides backup capability andadds support for tape autoloaders. The company said that its software will be priced based on the amount of data that is backed up. The new software also supports multi-flow backup from disk and enhanced log reports.

GoldPocket Powers Food Network Wedding Show
Los Angeles-based GoldPocket Interactive has inked another deal with the Food Network to provide interactive tools to the network. GoldPocket will allow mobile phone users to send messages for on-air display as part of the Food Network Caters Your Wedding program. The show will feature Giada De Laurentiis, Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay and Rachael Ray and interactive quizzes throughout the show. Apple Joins Blu-ray, Adds High Dev DVD Support
The latest chapter in the DVD format wars continues as Apple Computer announced its support for the Blu-ray Disc standard. The addition of Apple adds one more consumer electronic and computing firm to the Blu-ray roster of backers, and ups the ante in the competition for a dominant standard. Apple will join the board of directors of the Blu-ray group, which includes Dell, HP, Hitachi, Sony, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox, and Walt Disney among its backers. VIC Returns, Targets SF and LA
socalTECH has learned that the Venice Interactive Community (www.vicnetwork.com), one of the organizations most associated with the dot com boom in Southern California, has returned.
