Vitesse Appoints CFO
Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor said Thursday that it has appointed Yatin Mody as its CFO. Mody has been at Vitesse since 1992 and has served at Deloitte & Touche. The firm also named Eugene Hovanec as Executive Vice President responsible for legal and administrative affairs. Vitesse develops high speed semiconductors for the communications, networking, and storage markets.

JMAR Appoints Board Member
San Diego-based JMAR Technologies said this week that Dr. Paul Gilman, founding director of the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies (ORCAS), to its board. Gilman replaces Dr. John S. (Jack) Martinez. Gilman has also served as Assistant Administrator for the Office of Research and Development, the scientific and technological arm of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and also has been at Celera Genomics.

j2 Global Promotes Marketing Officer
Los Angeles-based j2 Global Communications this week said that the provider of messaging and fax services has promoted Hemi Zucker, the company's Chief Marketing Officer, to co-president. Zucker will be responsible for day-to-day operations on j2's operations, leaving co-president Scott Jarus focusing on strategic planning, M&A, and corporate development. j2 Global Communications provides fax and voicemail solutions, web-based conference calling, and more.

Digital Map Products Appoints Execs
Costa Mesa-based Digital Map Products has appointed a new CEO, Walt Stender. Stender has served at Hughes Electronics, ITT and FEI. The company also appointed Steve Riggins as VP Operations. Riggins joins from Composite Manufacturing. Digital Map Products is developing Web-based mapping applications used by governments to analyze land usage and for palnning purposes. The company is angel-backed by the Keiretsu Forum.

Acacia Expands Patents To Laptops
Newport Beach-based patent licensing firm Acacia Research said that it has expanded its patents into the area of laptop computing. The firm, which has been seeking patent licensing fees in areas ranging from broadband downloads to receipt printing. The patents it has acquired cover docking stations and the methods used to connect laptops to peripherals. Acacia has been filing numerous patent infringement suits against companies to pay it patent licensing fees.

Parasoft Ships Software Error Detection For Opteron
Monrovia-based Parasoft announced yesterday that it is shipping Parasoft Insure++ for AMD Opteron, an automated memory error detection tool for automating software error prevention. The tool, used to reduce the amount of software programming errors by software developers, supports the new AMD Opteron 64-bit development platform and Linux. Parasoft's tools are used to ensure high quality code, prevent software crashes, and eliminate programming errors by software developers.

Verizon, Movielink Launch Broadband Movie Download Service
Verizon Communications said yesterday that it has launched a new co-branded movie download service with Marina Del Rey-based Movielink. The new service allows Verizon DSL and FiOS Internet Services customers to access and rent Movielink's full library of titles. Verizon said that the movie downloaded service is the latest in a series of licensed content offerings it now offers, including an online music store and games.
