Cogent Acquires Kinetic Sciences
South Pasadena-based Cogent Systems has acquired British Colunbia-based Kinetic Sciences, a developer of fingerprint sensor and identification solutions, for $750,000. Cogent said that it has acquired the assets and intellectual property of the firm, and in particular three U.S. patents focused on low profile optical sensors and image reconstruction technology. Vativ Signs SMC Networks As First Customer
San Diego-based Vativ Technologies is announcing today that it has received its first customer win, with Irvine-based SMC Networks. Vativ, a developer of 10 Gigabit Copper Ethernet transceivers, will provide its technology to SMC for use with SMC's high performance switch products. Conforma Therapeutics Raises $11M
San Diego-based Conforma Therapeutics announced yesterday that it has raised $11M in a final tranche of its Series C funding. Investors included Domain Associates, Forward Ventures, Inglewood Ventures, Lilly BioVentures, Novo A/S, Proquest Investments, RBC Capital Partners, RiverVest Venture Partners, and S.R. One Limited. Snap Adds News Searching
Idealab's Snap search engine has added a news search engine, powered by X1 Technologies and Moreover. The company's new site, newsfilter.com, uses an X1-style "search-as-you-go" interface that allows users to type in partial searches which are updated on the fly, showing the nearest matches. Like the X1 interface, the Snap.com search shows a preview of the web page on the right hand pane, including text and a snapshot of the web page view. Spitzer Sues Intermix Over Ad Software
New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer this week sued Los Angeles-based Intermix Media alleging that the firm installed intrusive ad software and spyware. The lawsuit, filed in New York, claims that Intermix installed ad-delivery programs without disclosure to users. The Attorney General said that the Intermix software redirects web addresses to Intermix proprietary search engines and web sites, as well as placing advertising toolbars and popups on users desktops.
