Sequoia Communications Adds VP
San Diego-based Sequoia Communications said this week that it has hired Scott Walley as VP of Systems Engineering. Sequoia, a venture-backed developer of RF semiconductors, said that Walley will lead a team to advance its multi-mode RF transceivers. Walley was VP of engineering at Irvine-based Morpho Technologies, a developer of software defined radio solutions. Walley has also served at Skyworks Solutions (Conexant).

Jazz Rolls Out 0.18um Process
Newport Beach-based Jazz Semiconductor has rolled out a new CMOS semiconductor process at 0.18um, as the company targets integrated analog, RF, and power semiconductor designs at the foundry. The company said that its new 0.18um process allows for integration of power devices such as regulators, battery chargers, and power amplifiers with Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC), and should serve designers of cellular phones, wireless handheld devices, consumer electronics, and displays with b (More info...)

Linspire Signs Micro Center
San Diego-based Linspire has signed an agreement with electronics retailer Micro Center to feature its Linux desktop computing distribution in boxed and pre-installed software at Micro Center stores. Micro Center is a 20 store nationwide chain of computer retail stores. Linspire will installed on both desktop and laptop machines for purchase at Micro Center. Toshiba Buys Panasonic HDD Design Center
Toshiba's Irvine-based Toshiba America Information Systems said yesterday that it has acquired Panasonic Shikoku Electronics' U.S. hard disk drive design center. The center, which develops small form factor disk drives (HDDs) for the portable market, is based in Fremont. The center's 50 employees will support HDD development for Toshiba and its US-based customers. Terms were not disclosed.

Napster Boosts Subscribers, Posts Loss
Los Angeles-based digital music download service Napster reported its Q4 results yeterday, saying that it now has 412,000 subscribers to its service. The company lost $24.1M on revenues of $17.4M, as it invested in an aggressive rollout of its services. Napster is now competing against a wide array of competitors, including Apple's iTunes, Yahoo!, RealNetworks, and others looking to garner a large piece of the emerging music download market.
