SMC Ships 10G Switch
Irvine-based SMC Networks this week shipped a new, high density 10 gigabit switch. The switch is the first 10G switch in the company's lineup, and provides up to 8 ports of 10G connectivity. The new switch is targeted at workgroups and power users, and supports up to 160Gbps of throughput. SMC said that the new switch supports any available XFP transceiver and will retail for a MSRP of $7999.99 not including transceivers. DriveCam Focuses On Taxi Safety
San Diego-based startup DriveCam Video Systems announced this week that it is now shipping a new security feature for its onboard video monitoring systems. The company said that its new DriveCam Passenger Transportation Mode (PTM) records images of the driver and passengers when a vehicle door is opened or closed. TransDimension Adds USB To DVD
Irvine-based TransDimension this week said that its USB software and hardware has been embedded into Pioneer's new HDD DVD recorder for the Japanese market. The Pioneer DVR-555H-S provides DVD recording with a 250GB hard disk and USB host and peripheral connectivity. The USB connectivity allows consumers to connect their DVR to their PC without using an Ethernet network. TransDimension provides a single chip USB controller for use in a wide range of electronic equipment.

Boingo Takes Flight
Santa Monica-based Boingo Wireless has inked a deal with Connexion by Boeing to offer in-flight Wi-Fi roaming. Boingo said that all Connexion by Boeing flights equipped with high speed Internet and data services will now be part of the Boingo roaming wireless service. The in-flight wireless roaming is priced per connection based on flight length. Connexion's services are currently available on a number of international flights, and are in the process of being rolled out to U.S. domestic flights. (More info...)

Cephalon Acquires Salmedix for $160M
Biotechnology firm Cephalon has acquired La Jolla-based Salmedix for $160M plus $40M on the achievement of certain regulatory milestones. Salmedix is a venture-backed startup developing drug treatments for cancer. Salmedix has a drug, Treanda, currently in Phase II clinical trials in the US and Canada for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
