Autobytel Appoints New CFO
Irvine-based Autobytel announced this week that Michael Schmidt has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Schmidt has been at Autobytel since April 2004 as SVP Finance. Schmidt previously served as CFO of Autoweb.com, and also served at Telephia and IMS Health.

DivX Gets Win At LG Electronics
San Diego-based DivX Networks has scored another win for its digital video format. LG Electronics, a major manufacturer of consumer electronics, has introduced DivX Certification for its DVD devices in Canada. The two companies said that LG's line of DVD devices will feature DivX decompression capability and the ability to play DivX encoded disks. DivX provides a video compression technology that it licenses to companies for encoding and playback.

Jiggerbug Adds Audio Book Download Service
West Hollywood-based Jiggerbug said this week that it has added downloaded audio books to its offerings. The company, which provides audio book rental in a subscription form similar to Netflix, said that the new service will allow subscribers to download their favorite audio books in digital format. The new service uses Overdrive and the WMA copy protected format to allow for digital downloads. Kyocera Rolls New BREW-Enabled Phone
San Diego-based Kyocera Wireless said yesterday that it is rolling out a new CDMA wireless phone based on the Qualcomm BREW standard. The new Kyocera Dorado KX13 can download games and ringtones built on the BREW standard over the air. The new phone provides a WAP 2.0 compatible browser, BREW 2.1 or Java support, and the ability to download wallpapers, screensavers, games, and ringtones.

Kaplan Professional Acquires eMind
Kaplan Professional has acquired Los Angeles-based eMind, a provider of online education and compliance software. Kaplan Professional is a division of educational services provider Kaplan Inc. Terms were not disclosed. Kaplan said that eMind will become part of its Dearborn Financial Services unit. eMind's compliance software provides online education to the securities and insurance industries. Titan, L3 Communications Merge In $2.65B Deal
San Diego-based defense contractor Titan Corporation (TTN) and L3-Communications said this morning that the two would merge in a $2.65B all-cash deal. L3 Communications will acquire all of Titan and assume all of its debt. Titan is a provider of information and communications systems to the Department of Defense, and has approximately 12,000 employees and revenues of $2.4B. The deal is subject to approval by Titan shareholders, government regulatory reviews, and other closing conditions.
