Shopzilla Opens Lab Site
Los Angeles-based comparison shopping site Shopzilla has opened up a new web site focused on showcasing its research projects. The company said that its new zLabs site (zlabs.shopzilla.com) will showcase the company's latest technical innovations. The new site will allow users to use pre-released versions of Shopzilla's comparison shopping service. StreamCast Rolls Out Morpheus Version 5.0
Los Angeles-based StreamCast Networks, the maker of the popular file sharing software Morpheus, said today that it has launched version 5.0 of the peer to peer file swapping software. The new software integrates searching for BitTorrent files, an improved user interface, and better media support. The Morpheus software is used by users to download and swap MP3, audio, music, video, games, and other software through the Internet. Archos Receives Strategic Investment From EchoStar
Irvine-based Archos, the US-arm of ARCHOS SA, said today that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Echostar Communications to develop portable digital video recorder technology for EchoStar. EchoStar is investing approximately $9M in Archos as part of the deal. The companies said that Archos will provide EchoStar with portable digital video recorders that can directly transfer video content from DISH Network set-top boxes. DATAllegro Gets Investment From Intel Capital
Aliso Viejo-based data warehouse appliance provider DATAllegro is reporting that it has added Intel Capital to its list of Series B venture investors. Intel has made an equity investment as part of the previously announced Series B investment, which was led by Adams Capital Management. DATAllegro said that it will use the funding to further develop and market its data warehouse appliance.

ProfitLine Raises $15M
San Diego-based ProfitLine, a provider of telecom expense management services, said today that it has closed a $15M round of Series B funding. Funding came from FTVentures and existing investor Menlo Ventures. The company said that the funding brings the total venture funding in the firm to $32M. The company will use the proceed to enable its recent acquisition of FedCel, a mobile outsourcer. Eric S. Byunn of FTVentures has joined the company's board.

MP3 Player Market Booming
The market for hard disk and flash-based portable audio players is booming, according to a recently released report from research firm In-Stat. The research firm is reporting that the Digital Audio Player market has topped $4.5B, and is expected to reach 104 million units by 2009, up from the 27.8M units sold in 2004. The firm reports that falling prices, subscription and pay-per-download music services, and smaller hard drives and increased flash memory capacity are behind the booming market. T (More info...)
