Language Weaver Hires Exec
Los Angeles-based Language Weaver announced this week that it has hired Kirti Vashee as VP of Sales and Marketing. Vashee has served at EMC, Dow Jones, Legato, and Smart Storage. The company said that Vashee will direct the company's worldwide sales and marketing. Language Weaver is a provider of automatic machine translation software, used by the Department of Defense and other government agencies to translate foreign language text.

Buy.com Taps Commission Junction
Aliso Viejo-based Buy.com and Santa Barbara-based Commission Junction, the affiliate management business of ValueClick, said today that Buy.com has agreed to use Commission Junction for its performance marketing program and affiliate marketing channel. Buy.com moved its affiliate program to Commission Junction in June. The two companies said that Buy.com will also use Commission Junction's product catalog functionality. Disney Launches Into Mobile Phones
North Hollywood-based Walt Disney Internet Group said this morning that it is forming a new, mobile business focused on national U.S. wireless phone service for families. The new wireless phone service, built on a partnership with Sprint and its PCS wireless phone network, will offer wireless service, custom handsets, and applications targeted at families. Broadcom, Qualcomm In Antitrust Battle
Irvine-based Broadcom and San Diego-based Qualcomm have engaged in the latest patent related battle, as Bradcom announced yesterday that it has engaged in litigation against Qualcomm claiming that Qualcomm's licensing and other practices violate U.S. antitrust laws. Broadcom filed a complaint July 1st in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey asserting that Qualcomm has abused the wireless standards-setting process, and that Qualcomm collects discriminatory royalties, c (More info...)

Q2 Venture Funding Totals
Southern California's Q2 Venture totals show that the number of venture investments in the area totaled $482.5M, and include 11 investments in April, 22 investments in May, and 9 investments in the month of June. The most active firms for the last three months were Mission Ventures and Domain Associates, with 4 deals each; followed by Redpoint Ventures, Palomar Ventures, and Menlo Ventures with 3 deals each.
