Quest Completes Vintela Acquisition
Irvine-based Quest Software has completed its acqiusition of Vintela. Quest announced the acqusition of Vintela in June. Quest will add Vintela's Microsoft Active Directory software into its product portfolio. Vintela's products allow Microsoft products to integrate with Unix, Linux, Java, and Mac systems. Quest is paying $57.4M in cash for all the outstanding shares of Vintela, as well as assumption of options equivalent to 1.4M shares of Quest common stock.

Pentadyne Ships Flywheel Based Medical Power System
Anaheim-based Pentadyne Power has rolled out a new flywheel-based medical grade power system for high peak-power diagnostic equipment. The company said that its new system designs power for CT scanners, linear accelerators, and MRI and radiography and other medical systems. The system replaces lead-acid batteries with its own flywheel system, providing UPS capability in a much smaller space and with less cost and environmental impact of lead-acid batteries. Evolution Robotics Lands Beta Customer
Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics has landed a customer for its LaneHawk visual scanning system for shopping carts. Evolution said that Pathmark Stores is testing the company's system to reduce bottom of the basket loss in its stores. Evolution uses automated visual pattern recognition to identify products in shopping carts without scanning bar codes, and automatically include them in point of sale. Photoleap Rolls Out Group Photo Sharing
San Diego-based Photoleap has rolled out a new version of its photo sharing software, adding a new group photo sharing feature to the software. Photoleap provides the ability to share photos online, and is now offering the ability for people to email a Photoleap address and receive a full album. Photoleap said that its Leapback feature is targeted at group events such as weddings and birthdays. Cisco Completes NetSift Acquisition
Cisco announced yesterday that it has completed its acquisition of San Diego-based NetSift, a developer of packet processing technology. Cisco had announced the acquisition of the startup in June for $30M. NetSift's technology will be used by Cisco for deep packet processing, including modular switching in its core platforms. NetSift is a spinoff of UC San Diego and was backed by Enterprise Partners.

Qualcomm Countersues Broadcom
San Diego-based Qualcomm has filed a countersuit against Irvine-based Broadcom alleging patent infringement on the company's GSM/GPRS and Wi-Fi patents. Qualcomm said that it has filed suit against Broadcom in federal court in San Diego for infringement of seven of its patents. The patents cover the manufacture and use of equipment with the GSM, GPRS, and EDGE celluar standards, as well as patents covering interoperability in Wi-Fi. Skype, Boingo Team On Wi-Fi
Santa Monica-based Boingo Wireless and voice over IP company Skype said this morning that the two companies will begin providing global Wi-Fi Access for Skype userse. Skype will offer "Skype Zones" powered by Boingo, offering global Wi-Fi access to Skype customers. The deal calls for Skype to have access to Boingo's network of 18,000 Wi-Fi hot spots to make unlimited Skype Internet telephony calls.
