Kotura Expands Board of Directors
Monterey Park-based Kotura said this week that Dr. Andrew Rickman, founder of optical products maker Bookham, has been appointed to the company's board. Kotura develops CMOS-based optical components. The company's board also includes representatives from ARCH Venture Partners, GF Private Equity, ComVEntures, and Dr. Tingye Li of Bell Labs and AT&T.

Disney Online Names VP
North Hollywood-based Disney Online said this week that it has named Brad Davis as VP of Advertising Sales. Davis has previously served at American Online and Comcast Spotlight. Disney Online said that Davis would lead all media sales efforts for Disney.com, FamilyFun.com, and Movies.com and other Disney Online properties. Disney Online develops kids entertainment for the Web, including the popular Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney web sites.

Qualcomm Adds WLAN Functionality
San Diego-based Qualcomm said today that its chipsets will support the Philips wireless local area network (WLAN) module, a way for mobile phone makers using Qualcomm's CDMA silicon to add 802.11b and 802.11g connectivity. The company said that the WLAN connectivity will help it address the demand for additional functionality in mobile devices. The WLAN solution allows mobile handsets to use high speed wireless local area networks when available, and should be available by the end of the year.

Gateway Rolls Out New Low-Cost PC Line
Irvine-based Gateway has rolled out a new line of PCs in time for the holiday season. The company's eMachines brand rolled out five new PCs, including a $339 desktop PC and $799 notebook PC. The company said that it would expand distribution of its PCs through Wal-Mart, specifically targeting a notebook PC for holiday promotions. Five of the PCs include 64-bit processors, based on the AMD Athlon 64 line of processors. The new W4605 notebook PC weighs 5.5 pounds and uses the AMD Sempron 2800+ pro (More info...)

Broadband Growth Slows
A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life project shows that broadband growth in the U.S. is slowing, and speculates that slowing adoption may spur worries that the United States is falling behind other countries in broadband uptake. The report said that 53% of home Internet users had broadband connections as of May 2005, up slightly from 50% of Internet users in December of 2004. Intermix Founder Protests Acquisition
The former founder and CEO of Intermix Media, Brad Greenspan, is on a campaign against the acquisition of the company by News Corp. Greenspan, who was head of Intermix until October of 2003, has set up www.intermixedup.com to outline his reasons for voting against the acquisition of Intermix by News Corp.
