SMC Taps Agere For Gigabit Ethernet
Irvine-based SMC Networks said this week that it is shipping a new line of Gigabit workgroup switches powered by Agere single chip Ethernet chips. SMC's TigerSwitch 1000 switches provide 48-port Gigabit Ethernet connectivity using a single chip, lowering the cost of providing Gigabit Ethernet. SMC is targeting corporate networks where administrators are looking to upgrade network speeds and capabilities. Citrix Upgrades Support Software
Santa Barbara-based Citrix Online said this week that it has upgraded its online GoToAssist customer support tool. The company's new GoToAssist 7 adds management tools for monitoring the load of support teams, an application programming interface to chat applications, and transfer of calls between customer support agents, among other features. JMAR Gets SBIR
San Diego-based JMAR Technologies said this morning that it has been granted a Phase I SBIR from the U.S. Army. JMAR will use the grant to develop a new sensor for remote detection of hazardous materials. The company is looking to develop a compact laser system capable of real-time spectrochemical hazard analysis for field deployment. JMAR is a developer of laser modules use for X-ray source generation, microscopy, and nanotech scale fabrication, along with spectrochemical analysis.

Cadence Pharmaceuticals Scores $25M
San Diego-based Cadence Pharmaceuticals has raised $25M in a Series A funding. The company, a specialty pharmaceuticals company, said that it raised the funding from Domain Associates, with participation by Proquest Investments, BB Biotech Ventures, CDIB BioScience Venture Management, Windamere Venture Partners, and private investors. The company is developing pharmaceuticals focused on in-hospital applications.

Study: Web Mail Gains As Primary Email, Yahoo Tops Survey
A new study shows that residential Internet subscribers are maintaining long relationships with free online email services, and often using those emails as their primary emails instead of the accounts from their ISPs. According to a study released today by research firm J.D. Power and Associates, forty-three percent of Internet service subscribers use Web email as the primary email account, versus 57 percent who use their ISP for email.
