Caltech Constructs Earthquake Supercomputer
Pasadena-based Caltech said yesterday that it has created what it calls one of the most powerful computer clusters in the academic world to analyze earthquakes. The university said that it has created a 2,048-processor supercomputer as part of a new Geosciences Computational Facility in its Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. The new supercomputing cluster fills a 20 by 80-foot room at Caltech and cost $5.8M, and requires 500 kilowatts of power and 90 tons of air conditioning to opera (More info...)

Tech Coast Angels Announce 100th Funding
The Tech Coast Angels today is announcing that it has funded its 100th company, and has invested a total of $10.7M in companies during calendar year 2005. The TCA said that its members have invested in 21 companies so far this year, versus 17 company investments in 2004. The angel group also reported that outside investors have invested $84.3M in TCA portfolio companies this year. Impinj Inks RFID Deal With Texas Instruments
Newport Beach and Seattle-based fabless semiconductor firm Impinj and Texas Instruments said yesterday that the two companies have inked an agreement for Impinj to provide its RFID chips to TI's product line. TI will tap Impinj's Monza RFID Generation 2 chips for its RFID inlay and strap products. TI will use the chips for its manufacturing of RFID tags for use in consumer goods and supply chain applications. Americans Are Online Sellers
The latest report from the Pew Internet and American Life project finds that 17% of Americans online, approximately 25 million, have use the internet to sell things. In addition, the project found that online classifieds are showing an 80 percent growth in online visitors, with particular growth in the popularity of the Craiglist online web sites. The Pew survey also found that access to online auction sites has stabilized at around 24% of Internet users accessing those sites, with most growth (More info...)

Software Providers Create Linux Phone Design
Embedded Linux provider MontaVista Software, San Diego-based SKY MobileMedia, along with Bluefin Mobile and Digital Airways have teamed to create a Linux-based mobile phone platform. The companies demonstrated a integrated mobile phone solution this week running on the MontaVista embedded Linux operating system, with an integrated voice and data software stack. Black Monday Online Shopping Results Rise 26 Percent
comScore Networks is reporting that its survey of online spending shows that year to year sales increased 26% for the critical "Black Monday", the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday. The web traffic analysis firm found that non-travel online spending rose to $485M versus $386M last year. For the entire Thanksgiving weekend (Thurs-Sun) the firm reported $925M in purchases, up from $737M last year.
