DivX Adds Mac Support
San Diego-based DivX has released a new entree into the Mac market with the release of an upgraded digital media product for creating DivX encoded video on the Apple platform. DivX said that it has released DivX 6 for Mac, including DivX Converter for Mac, a stand-alone DivX encoder for the Mac platform. The new DivX Converter software provides drag and drop encoding into the DivX format. The release also includes a Quicktime codec plug-in for playback and export of DivX video. AOL Targets Hollywood News
America Online and telepictures Products said yesterday that the two companies are launching a new, 24/7 on-demand entertainment new network focused on Hollywood. The two companies are launching TMZ.com, a news network covering entertainment news, celebrities, movies, and more. TMZ refers to the thirty mile zone around Hollywood. Los Angeles Area Tech Firms Hit By Piracy Charges
The Business Software Alliance, a software piracy watchdog group, said this week that it has received settlements of more than $500,000 from five Los Angeles area technology firms for installing unlicensed copies of commercial software. The Business Software Alliance (BSA) said that Lake Forest-based FutureTrade paid the group $54,136.97 for installing unlicensed Adobe, Borland, and Microsoft software programs on its computers and Calabasas-based NovaLogic paid $153,500 for installing unlicense (More info...)

Semiconductor Association Funds Nanoelectronics Research
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said that it has made five research grants to bolder nanoelectronics research at U.S. universities, including a grant to the Western Institute of Nanoelectronics (WIN) headquartered to UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. EA To Buy JAMDAT For $680M
Electronic Arts and Los Angeles-based JAMDAT Mobile said yesterday afternoon that the two companies have entered into a definitive merger agreement where EA will acquire JAMDAT. EA said that it will pay $27 per share in cash, for a total purchase price of roughly $680M. JAMDAT Mobile is a developer of wireless and mobile entertainment titles for mobile phones.
