Google Acquires Writely: Which Web 2.0 Startup Is Next?
Google's acqusition last week of Writely, a provider of an online word processing tool, has raised hopes in the Web 2.0 community that there will be more acquisitions of next generation Web companies. Google disclosed that it acquired Upstartle, the maker of Writely last week, although no terms of the acquisition were discussed. Akonix Rolls Comprehensive Instant Messaging Security Bundle
San Diego-based Akonix Systems announced today that it has rolled out new software that provides comprehensive, mluti-tiered security for public and private instant messaging. The firm said that its new 360 Degree Security includes multiple layers of security protection, and incorporates both the Akonix L7 Enforcer and L7 Enterprise products, virus protection through Sophos, and other features. BidShift Gets Win In Missouri
San Diego-based BidShift has scored a win for its shift management software at a Kansas City-based health care provider. The firm has implemented its online staffing software at Carondelet Health, which operates two hospitals in Kansas. BidShift said that the health provider will implement its systems at St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center. Semtech Names CEO
Camarillo-based Semtech has named a new CEO, saying yesterday that it has hired Mohan Maheswaran as President and CEO. Maheswaran replaces interim CEO John D. Poe, who has been acting as CEO since September. Poe remains on the company's board as Chairman. Maheswaran was most recently EVP and General Manager at Intersil Corporation, and was also at Elantec Semiconductor. Semtech is a provider of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products.

Walt Disney Internet Names VP
North Hollywood-based Walt Disney Internet Group has named Eric Freeman as VP of Technology. The firm said that Freeman will be responsible for technology development of the company's web properties and new media for its theme parks and resort hotel properties. Freeman was most recently at O'Reilly Media, and has served at Disney previously when he directed the company's portal division. Freeman is also the author of O'Reilly's "Head First" technical reference books.

WebMessenger Adds Chief Marketing Officer
Los Angeles-based WebMessenger has appointed a new marketing officer, the firm said today. Joe Naylor has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of Product Development. Naylor joins the firm from j2 Global Communications, where he was a vice president in charge of its eFax Corporate services. WebMessenger is a provider of instant messaging products targeted at both enterprises and consumers.

D-Link Taps New Distributor
Fountain Valley-based D-Link has signed on a new distributor, SYNNEX, a distributor of products in North America. SYNNEX will distribute D-Link's switch, wireless, broadband, and digital home products. Synnex distributes electronic products to value added resellers (VARs) and system integrators. D-Link is a manufacturer of network switches, WiFi routers, and other products.
