Uniloc Raises $6.1M
Irvine-based Uniloc USA is reporting that it has raised $6.1M in private equity. Uniloc is developing technology for device-based security and software copy control. The firm's technology uses a method of identifying hardware using physical imperfections of that device. Investors in the firm were not disclosed.

Norcal Entrepreneurs Bankroll Clean Technology Challenge

QUALCOMM Makes Investment In China
Qualcomm today announced in Shanghai that it is working with China TechFaith Wireless Communications Technology (TechFaith) to create a new Chinese firm, TechSoft. Qualcomm and TechFaith will invest up to $35M to found TechSoft, a new company focused on developing application software for wireless devices. UCSB Gets $1.25M From W.M. Keck Foundation
UC Santa Barbara has received a new, $1.25M grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation for a new research initiative around microRNA, the school is reporting. The foundation will fund research into tiny RNA molecules (microRNAs) and their impact on the regulation of gene function. The interdisciplinary research grant includes professors from chemical engineering, mechanical and environmental engineering, biology, and physics.

Evolution Robotics, WowWee In Alliance
Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics and toy maker WowWee Robotics announced this morning that the two companies will integrate Evolution's vision and navigation technology into the next generation of WowWee products. WowWee is the developer of the popular Robosapien and Roboraptor consumer entertainment products. Vitesse Names New CTO
Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor has named a new CTO for the firm, and appointing a new Vice President of Engineering. Vitesse said today that it has appointed Dr. Chi Fai Ho as CTO, and Paul Brown to VP of Engineering for its Ethernet Products division. Ho was most recently VP of Engineering for Tidal Networks, and has also served at Nokia and Amber Networks. Brown was most recently at 3Com. Viaspace Acquires Caltech Software License
Pasadena-based Viaspace has licensed more technology from Caltech, the firm said yesterday. The company, which is commercializing technology from JPL, said that it acquired the license for a real-time inference engine called SHINE. SHINE software is used by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for space flight operations, and Viaspace said that its Arroyo Sciences subsidiary will commercialize and develop that technology.
