Southern California Q1 Venture Deals Up From Last Year
Q1 Venture Capital deals in Southern California totaled $763.2M in investments, with 68 deals since January of this year, according to our records. The venture capital dealflow this year was up from the similar period last year, where there were $527.3M in investments and 55 deals. The most active month this quarter was February, with 27 venture capital deals reported; January had 23 deals, and March had 18 deals. Movie Studios Launch Download To Own
MGM, Paramount, Sony, Twentieth Century, Universal, and Warner Bros. are launching download-to-own of their movies today, in a new deal with Santa Monica-based MovieLink. MovieLink said this morning that the studios will allow consumers to buy movie downloads online, for permament ownership and on the same day as DVD releases. MediaFLO, Network Live Team On Live Entertainment
San Diego-based MediaFLO, the Qualcomm subsidiary that is developing a nationwide media delivery network, and Los Angeles-based Network LIVE, are in a new deal to provide Network LIVE content and programming over MediaFLO's wireless multimedia broadcast service. The two companies said that Network LIVE will develop and distribute its live entertainment programming via MediaFLO's network. eHarmony Shuffles CEO, Again
Pasadena-based online dating site eHarmony has shuffled its CEO, again, as Jaynie Studenmund, the company's CEO since February 1st, resigned. Studenmund is being replaced by Gregory Waldorf. Studenmund will continue to serve on the company's board of directors. Waldorf is the founding investor in eHarmony, and will head up a committee to find a replacement. Qualcomm Signs Soft Modem Company
San Diego-based Qualcomm said today that Icera, a wireless soft modem company located in Bristol, England, has signed a software patent agreement with Qualcomm. Icera will receive rights under certain Qualcomm patents to develop software products for WCDMA devices. Qualcomm licenses its CDMA technology to a wide range of manufacturers and others in the wireless space.
