My interview this morning is with Alex Bard, CEO of Goowy (www.goowy.com), a San Diego-based company in the Web 2.0 space. Austin Ventures Buys 724 Solutions
Austin Ventures, a Texas-based venture capital firm, has acquired Santa Barbara-based 724 Solutions, a provider of IP-based network and data services. 724 Solutions, said yesterday that Austin will buy the firm for $3.34 per common share. 724 is listed on the Nasdaq, but recently was given a delisting notice from the market after it failed to meet market capitalization minimums. 724 Solutions' development operations are in Canada and Switzerland, but maintains its corporate offices in Santa Barb (More info...)

Red Herring Names Southern California Firms To Finalists
The Red Herring magazine has named a number of Southern California-based firms to its annual list of Red Herring 100 North America finalists. The magazine said this week that Amp'd Mobile, DriveCam, Entropic Communications, iRise, MovieBeam, Nereus Pharmaceuticals, Newport Media, Revver, SpotRunner, Streamload, TagWorld, Tarari, and Xencor had been named to its finalists list, all Southern California's technology firms. Celebrities Launch Mobile Blogging Service
Sprint has launched a new, mobile blogging service with a Los Angeles-based company, BlogStar, focused on Hollywood celebrities. BlogStar, hoping that subscribers to Sprint will pay to get postings from celebrities including Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Nicky Hilton, Kelly Slater, David Arquette, Wesley Snipes, and Alicia Silverstone. Blogstar said that the new service will feature daily mobile entertainment content from the celebrities direct from their mobile phones.

Qualcomm Targets EV-DO Rev B in 2007
San Diego-based Qualcomm said today that it expects to unveil its next generation, EV-DO high speed wireless standard in 2007. The firm said it has chipsets for EV-DO Rev. B on the way to commercialization by 2007. Qualcomm's EV-DO wireless standard provides high speed access and is targeted at high data rate wireless data, music, and multimedia access. EV-DO Rev B. is expected to raise the data rates to 4.9Mbps to each wireless channel, with the ability to combine channels for data rates of up (More info...)

Interchange Appoints VP
Irvine-based Interchange, operator of the Local.com local search engine, has appointed a new VP. The firm named Jennifer Black as VP of Marketing. Black joins the firm from Autobytel, and has also served at Teleflora and Overstock.com. Interchange operates a local search engine site.

EdenTree To Resell Calient
Camarillo-based EdenTree, a provider of lab management and automation software, has signed a new deal to resell optical switching management products from Calient Networks. EdenTree will resell the equipment into the test lab automation market. EdenTree provides a lab automation software for managing and scheduling lab resources and test configurations.
