Demand Media Raises $120M, Buys eNom
Los Angeles-based Demand Media, a new company headed by Richard Rosenblatt, former CEO of Intermix Media and chairman of MySpace, has raised $120M and purchased a major provider of domain name registration, eNom. The firm said Monday that it has acquired Seattle-based eNom, the world's third largest domain name registrar, as part of its strategy to profit from highly-trafficked domain names. Funding for the deal came from Spectrum, Oak Investment Partners, and Generation Partners.

Southern California Firms Pitch Bay Area VCs

Smarter.com Adds Desktop Software
Monrovia-based Smarter.com, an online comparison shopping engine, has launched a new, desktop software application that ties users into its service. The firm said that its new application allows users to compare prices on items, receive coupons, and auto-fill checkout forms. According to Smarter.com the purpose of the companion software is to make sure that consumers get the best deal. The software runs on Windows computers. Smarter.com is a service of Mezi Media.

Luxtera Adds VPs
Carlsbad-based Luxtera has appointed two new vice presidents, saying that it has added Marek Tlalka as Vice President of Marketing, and James Perrott as Vice President of Sales. Tlalka joins from Ample Communications, and Perrott comes from Solarflare Communications. Luxtera is developing CMOS semiconductors that combine photonics with electronics, targeted at the optical networking space.

EVDB Adds Google Calendar Support
San Diego-based EVDB has added connections to Google's new calendar service, saying Wednesday that users of its Eventful.com site can now export events from its service to Google's new calendar service. EVDB said that the export to Google Calendar is meant to help its users to keep track of users to keep track of events discovered on the Eventful web site. Eventful provides a web-based, community-based calendaring service that allows anyone to add information about their events.
