BotMaster Sentenced, Xbox Hacker Pleads Guilty
It was a busy week for law enforcement in the technology area in Southern California this week, first with the news Monday that the Jeanson James Ancheta, of Downey, had been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for developing a "botnet", and with the news Tuesday that the co-owner of a Hollywood video game store had plead guilty to modifying Microsoft Xbox game consoles and pirating games. Women Attracted To Men Who Like Children
A new study published in a British scientific journal this week reports that women are able to determine how much men like children, simply by looking at a photo. The study, which was led by University of California Santa Barbara professor James Roney, found that women can detect a man's affinity for children based only on facial cues, and a man's attractiveness to women was predicted by how much he liked children. MP3tunes Adds TiVo Support
San Diego-based MP3tunes has rolled out a new, beta feature for its site, adding the ability to play MP3s from the popular TiVo digital video recorder. Michael Robertson, founder of MP3tunes, said Wednesday that the company is now offering a beta of the ability to stream music to Series 2 TiVo users using a broadband connection. MediciNova Expands Board
San Diego-based MediciNova said this morning it has added two new members to its board of directors. The firm said that it has appointed Arlene M. Morris and Alan W. Dunton to its board. Morris is President and CEO of Affymax, and Dunton is chairman of ActivBiotics. Medicinova is a biopharmaceuticals company that is developing treatments for cancer, asthma, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions.

eHarmony Names Marketing Exec
Pasadena-based eHarmony has named a new, chief marketing officer, saying this week that it has named Philip Armstrong to the position. Armstrong will be responsible for the company's branding and marketing activities. Armstrong was most recently VP of marketing at ditech.com, and has also served at Disney Interactive, Philips Electronics, and the Ford Motor Company. eHarmony is a provider of an online dating service based on personality testing.

Apani Promotes Executive
Brea-based Apani Networks has appointed Dean Norman as the company's Vice President of Sales for North America. Norman has been at the firm since last year, and previously served at Dell and NativeMinds, a startup that was acquired by Verity. Apani is a provider of enterprise network security software.

Semtech Protects HDMI
Camarillo-based Semtech has rolled out several new devices for protecting high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) and digital visual interface (DVI) products. The firm said this week that its new RClamp0544M devices can be used to protect computing devices and displays. The firm's components are incorporated into products by manufacturers. Semtech develops analog and mixed signal semiconductors for electronic devices and equipment.
