Google Throws Party At LACon IV
Google is embracing all things geek this week, saying today that it will throw a party at the LACon Science Fiction convention, which is kicking off in Anaheim starting tomorrow. According to a post in the Google's blog late Tuesday evening, the search engine giant is throwing a party at LACon IV this week, where Google employees from both Mountain View and Santa Monica will be there to talk to attendees. GERS, Ecometry Merge
San Diego-based GERS Retail Systems, a provider of planning, merchandising, and supplier collaboration software, has merged with Florida-based Ecometry. Terms were not disclosed. The deal was funded by private equity firm Golden Gate Capital, and will create a combined firm under the name Escalate Retail. That firm will focus on combining Ecometry's customer interaction and loyalty software for GERS merchandise planning software. Sea Launch Delivers Satellite Into Orbit
Long Beach-based Sea Launch, which is developing a mobile, sea-platform for the launch of rockets, said today that it has successfully delivered a communications satellite to geosynchronous orbit. The firm, which is a joint venture of Boeing, and a number of other firms, said that it delivered the Koreasat 5 communications satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit last night froma spot in the Pacific. Break.com Partners With Showtime
Los Angeles-based Break.com, a user-generated video sharing site at 18-48 year old males, said today that it has partnered with Showtime Networks to cross promote Showtime's series WEEDS. Break and Showtime will launch a joint promotion that invites users to submit their own video clips. Those clips will air on Showtime in co-branded spots, as part of the promotion for the next season of the series. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Avamar Partners With Accounting Firm
Irvine-based Avamar Technologies, a provider of enterprise data backup software, has entered into a strategic alliance with Crowe Chizek and Company LLC, a public accounting and consulting firm. The two companies said that they will deliver data protection and recovery strategies by offering Avamar's enterprise data protection software, through Crowe's business continuity management practice. DivX Gets Another DVD Player Win
San Diego-based DivX has added another DVD player to its list of certified devices, saying today that OPPO Digital has certified its DV-970HD Universal DVD Player with DivX. The player is the latest hardware to incorporate the DivX media format, which DivX licenses to consumer electronics and software firms. The DivX media format is a highly compressible video format, delivered in the form of video compression-decompression libraries (codecs).

j2 Opens FAX API
Los Angeles-based j2 Global Communications, a provider of online FAX and telecommunications services, is targeting developers with a new application programming interface. The firm said today that it has launched eFax Developer, an XML-based fax service that businesses can integrate into their systems. Siafu Lands Customer
Poway-based Siafu, a developers of networked storage appliances, said this morning that it has delivered its iSCSI storage appliance into a SAN for J-W Operating Company, an energy services firm in Addison, Texas. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Siafu is developing storage appliances that use the iSCSI storage networking protocol, which allows servers to connect to storage devices via Ethernet.
