Sony Buys Grouper For $65M
Culver City-based Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired Sausalito, California-based Grouper, a user-generated video site. Sony said very early this morning that it will pay $65M for Grouper. Grouper will retain its current management, and work closely with a team at Sony Pictures. The deal is the first major acquisition of a user-generated video site. DIRECTV Broadcasts To Cars
In another reason to watch out for that driver next to you, El Segundo-based DIRECTV said today that it will begin broadcasting local television stations to car video screens. DIRECTV said that it will start delivering live local news, weather, traffic, sports, and other local entertainment programming to cars, through a deal with KVH Industries. Former eMachines Owner Bids For Gateway Retail
Lap Shun Hui, the former owner of eMachines and current owner of Joui International, said late Tuesday night that it is proposing to acquire Gateway's retail operations for $450M. In a letter to Gateway's board which was released last night, Hui said that he was disappointed that Gateway has chosen not to "constructively engage" with Hui and his advisors. Greenspan Launches Chinese Investment Firm
Brad Greenspan, former founder, CEO, and Chairman of eUniverse (which became Intermix Media), has launched a new firm to invest in Chinese technology companies. Greenspan said today that he has launched and provided initial funding for BroadWebAsia, a new company that will invest in and partner with social networking, entertainment, and Internet search companies in Asia. Luxtera Ships All-CMOS Optical Transceiver
Carlsbad-based Luxtera is shipping a single-chip, integrated CMOS photonics transceiver, the firm said yesterday, in what the company claims is the first single-chip, dual XFP transceiver device that uses standard CMOS. Luxtera's new chip combines both optics and mainstream electronics on a single CMOS die, which should reduce the size, power consumption, and cost of optical transceivers. SOA Enters Asia With ITOCHU
