Mavent Gets $10M
Irvine-based Mavent has received $10M in a venture capital round, the firm said Monday. The round came from FTVentures. Mavent said that the investment brings the company's total institutional investment to $25M. Mavent provides automated compliance software for the mortgage industry. FTVentures is the original investor in Mavent.

N Spine Closes Series B
San Diego-based N Spine has raised a series B for its medical devices, the firm said Monday. The company said that the round was led by a firm in the spinal implant industry, but did not name the investor. N Spine develops a titanium pedicle screw system used for stablizing the lumbar spine. The firm's products are targeted as an adjunct to artificial disc replacement. N Spine is backed by the Tech Coast Angels and Life Science Angels.

NovaCardia Raises $48M in Series B
San Diego-based NovaCardia, a company developing pharaceuticals for the treatment of cardiovascular disease based on small molecule drugs, said this morning it has raised $48M in a Series B funding. The funding was led by Skyline Ventures, and also included new investor InterWest Partners. Prior investors Domain Associates, Forward Ventures, Montreux Equity Partners, and Versant Ventures also participated in the round.

MySpace Launches Safety Campaign With Seventeen
Los Angeles-based MySpace.com has launched a new Internet safety campaign with the teen magazine Seventeen. MySpace said today that it would launch a nationwide effort to educate Internet users about safe online practices, in a strategic partnership with Seventeen Magazine. The web site will provide parents, teens, and teachers with tips, suggestions, and information on safe Internet behavior. Breach Buys Open Source Security Firm
Carlsbad-based Breach Security announced today that it has acquired Thinking Stone Ltd., a provider of the open souirce ModSecurity web application firewall. Breach said that it has added founder Ivan Ristic as Chief Evangelist for the firm. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. ModSecurity's web application firewall is used by companies to manage web security and traffic. Gateway Rolls Out eMachines PCs
Irvine-based Gateway has rolled out a new line of low cost PCs targeted at holiday shoppers through its eMachines brand, saying this morning that it has rolled out three new desktop PCs. The new eMachines desktop PCs range from $349.99 to $519.99, and are based on Windows XP Media Center 2005. The company is rolling out the new holiday line-up to get a jump on the holiday season. DIRECTV Jumps On MySpace Bandwagon With TV Show
El Segundo-based DIRECTV has jumped on the MySpace bandwagon, saying that the satellite television provider will launch an original series based on MySpace. The company said that its new series Project MyWorld will follow three friends who will travel the world to visit the real people who have become their MySpace friends. The show will focus on three women, one looking for independent bands; another for adventure travel; and the other one for an Internet date.

X1 Appoints Engineering VP
Pasadena-based X1 Technologies has appointed a new Vice President of Engineering, announcing this morning that it has appointed Howard Silver to the position. Silver joins the firm from Zantaz, where he was VP of Product Development. Silver has also served as VP of several groups at storage softare firm Veritas. X1 is a provider of desktop search software, and is backed by Idealab and US Venture Partners.
