Interview with Michael Sawtell, The Family Post
Michael Sawtell is the Founder of The Family Post (www.thefamilypost.com), a company that operates a web-based service that allows families to create their own web sites to share photos, blogs, videos, and more. Michael is also the former President of Interchange, where he took the firm to an IPO in October of 2004. Akamai Buys Nine Systems For $160M
Akamai is buying San Diego-based Nine Systems, a provider of rich media production and publishing tools, in a deal worth approximately $160M. The companies said today that Akamai will pay 3.1M shares of Akamai common stock and $7M in cash for Nine Sytems in a merger transaction. Nine Systems develops software used for production and publishing of content online, which publishers used to manage their rich media. Nine Systems was advised by Merriman Curhan Ford & Co. in the transaction.

Newport Media Gets $30M
Lake Forest-based Newport Media, a developer of semiconductors for the mobile broadcast media market, said today that it has closed a $30M venture capital round from DAG Ventures. Existing investors Benchmark Capital, Global Catalyst Partners, Oak Investment Partners, Pinnacle Ventures, and Venrock Associates also participated in the Series C investment. Emulex Gets Win At Gateway
Costa Mesa-based Emulex announced this morning that Gateway will sell and support the firm's 4Gb/s PCI Express Fibre Channel host bus adapters. Emulex said that its products are now generally available from Gateway and implemented in Gateway's new 4Gb/s storage arrays. Products covered include the Emulex LPe1150 and LPe11002, single- and dual-channel HBAs for storage area networks.

D-Link, McAfee Partner On Internet Security Device
Fountain Valley-based D-Link, a provider of networking hardware, and McAfee today said that McAfee will offer its anti-virus software as part of a software package offered with D-Link's SMB security device, Securespot. The firms said that McAfee's security products will be offered as part of a subscription to D-Link's SECURESPOT network protection device. The D-LINK device provides threat protection for up to four computers connected in a home network.

Fonality Hires Open Source Expert
Los Angeles-based Fonality, a developer of open source IP telephony systems, announced this morning that it has hired an open source expert to its team. Fonality, which develops products based on the open source Asterisk software project, said it has hired an expert on Asterisk and trixbox as part of its team. The firm has hired Kerry Garrison as a Senior Product Manager. Universal Sues MySpace
Universal Music sued MySpace Friday, claiming that the popular social networking web site infringes on the copyrights of thousands of its artists. Responding to the lawsuit, MySpace said in a statement that Universal's lawsuit was "unnecessary and meritless", and that it is fully compliant with the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court Central District of California, Western Division.
