Helio Opens Retail Store
Los Angeles-based MVNO Helio said Tuesday that the firm is opening up a chain of retail stores, to market the firm's mobile phone service. The company said it is opening up a retail store at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, with a total of five stores to be open by early 2007. Helio said the 4,000 square foot store will revolve around the Helio brand, where customers can sample live devices and services, and sign up for Helio's wireless services. Orexigen Therapeutics Raises $30M
San Diego-based Orexigen Therapeutics said today that it has completed a $30M Series C funding. The firm said that the funding will be used to advance its clinical programs. Funding came from new investors MPM BioEquities and Wasatch Advisors, along with the firm's existing investors. Orexigen is developing treatments for obesity. The firm has now raised over $76M in funding. Prior investors in the firm include BA Venture Partners, Domain Associates, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Montreux (More info...)

Trimble Buys Spacient Technologies
Sunnyvale-based Trimble said today that it has acquired Long Beach-based Spacient Technologies,a provider of enterprise field service management and mobile mapping products used for municipalities and utilities. Financial terms were not disclosed. Spatient provides software used for wireless devices for the Geographic Information System (GIS) industry, used by utilities to manage field service operations. Spacient will become part of Trimble's Field Solutions business segment.

QLogic Connects EMC CLARiiON
Aliso Viejo-based QLogic said today that it has rolled out a new family of connectivity kits for connecting storage area networks to EMC's CLARiiON AX150 storage devices. The firm's new SAN Connectivity Kits provide a Fibre Channel switch, host bus adapters, cabling, and software for connecting hosts to the EMC storage. The kit is the latest from QLogic targeted at simplifying connecting servers into storage area networks.

WD Hires New VP
Lake Forest-based Western Digital said today that it has hired Jim Morris to serve as Vice President and General Manager of the company's Notebook Storage business unit. Morris will manage the firm's 2.5-inch form factor hard drive business. Morris was most recently at RSI Home Products, and has previously been at WD in a number of executive positions. Morris has also served at People PC. WD is a manufacturer of hard disk drives.
