HP Buys Bitfone
Palo Alto-based HP said today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Laguna Nigel-based Bitfone, a provider of software for mobile updating of wireless phones. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. HP said that the acquisition is part of its strategy to grow its mobile enterprise business. Bitfone will become part of HP's Handheld Business Unit. Bitfone currently employs 134, and has received more than $66M in venture capital funding from 3i Ventures, CIR Ventures, (More info...)

Websense Acquires PortAuthority
San Diego-based Websense said today that it is in an agreement to acquired Palo Alto-based PortAuthority Technologies, in a deal worth $90M in cash. PortAuthority is a provider of information leak prevention technology. The firms have been working together via an OEM technology alliance since September. The acquisition is expected to close in January.

Artes Medical Prices IPO
San Diego-based Artes Medical said today that it has priced its initial public offering. Artes is looking to raise up to $27.6M in an IPO on the Nasdaq Global Market. The firm said it will offer 4,600,000 shares of its common stock at a price of $6.00 per share. The firm's shares will be listed under the symbol ARTE. The IPO is being underwritten by Cowen and Company and Lazard Capital Markets. Artes Medical is developing aesthetic injectable products for the dermatology and plastic surgery mark (More info...)

Autobytel, Dealix In Settlement
Irvine-based Autobytel and Redwood City-based Dealix said today they have entered into a settlement agreement over a lawsuit filed by Autobytel against Dealix. According to the firms, Dealix will pay Autobytel $20M in payments, and that the two will dismiss the litigation. Autobytel will license its patents to Dealix and The Cobalt Group. The lawsuit was filed in 2004.

Gemstar Signs BSkyB
Los Angeles-based Gemstar-TV Guide International said yesterday that it has signed a patent licensing agreement with British Sky Broadcasting Limited. Sky will use Gemstar's electronic program guide technology on platforms in the UK and Ireland. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Gemstar-TV Guide owns technology and patents covering electronic program guides, which it licenses to consumer electronic manufacturers and broadcasters.

Broadcom Announces 10GbE Transceiver
Irvine-based Broadcom has announced a new 10 Gigabit Ethernet device for the high speed networking market. The firm's new 10GbE physical layer IC is used to connect optical networks via the 10 Gigabit Ethernet networking standard. Broadcom said that its new DSP-based 10GbE serial transciever works with both mluti-mode and signle-mode fiber infrastructure, and is targeted at being integrated into Ethernet switch and controller products and ASICs.

MojoPlay Announces LCD Gaming Displays
Walnut, California-based MojoPlay, a developer of video game accessories and electronics, said today that it has begun shipping LCD displays targeted at the Microsoft Xbox 360. The firm said that the new device provides 800 x 480 resolution and built in stero speakers, as well as dual headphone jacks. The company said that the new device is the first in a line of display being introduced for 2007 from the firm.
