Global IP Solutions Buys CrystalVoice
Santa Barbara-based CrystalVoice, which develops real-time, IP-based sound applications, has been acquired by San Francisco-based Global IP Solutions. Global IP Solutions said it has acquired CrystalVoice's security and packet management technology, and will offer CrystalVoice's products to enterprise organizations. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CrystalVoice is venture backed by DFJ Frontier.

VentiRx Gets Additional Venture Backing From Domain
San Diego-based VentiRx, a firm developing novel medicines for the treatment of cancer, infectious, respiratory, and autoimmune diseases, has received venture backing from Domain Associates, socalTECH has learned. The firm, which was founded in June of 2006 with funding from Frazier Healthcare Ventures and ARCH Venture Partners, now also lists Domain Associates as an investor in the firm. Domain has also added the firm to its list of portfolio companies on its web site as of this week.

UCSB Team Makes Laser Breakthrough
A team of researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, are reporting this week that they have made a major breakthrough in the development of laser diodes. The team said that they have achieved lasing operation in nonpolar gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, creating the world's first nonpolar blue-violet laser diodes. TeleFlip Launches Mobile Information Service
Los Angeles-based TeleFlip has launched the firm's mobile information service today at the DEMO 07 conference, unveiling a new service that allows mobile phones to receive email, calendars, and online content feeds. Teleflip said that the service will be available in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe in March, and that the new service will be free to users. SIPphone Rolls Out Web-based VoIP Widget
San Diego-based SIPphone has rolled out a new, web-based VoIP product based on the Gizmo Project. The company said today that it has launched Gizmo Call, which allows anyone to call anywhere in the world from a web-based widget. The new service uses an Adobe Flash plug-in which connects with Gizmo's Voice-over-IP calling services. The new software runs on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, and Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, and Safari browsers.

Integrien Upgrades Enterprise IT Software
Irvine-based Integrien has launched an upgrade to the firm's IT management software, saying today at DEMO that its latest version, Alive 5.5, now includes deeper SAP integration and new alert and problem predication capability. The firm has also moved to AJAX technology from Java Applets on the firm's dashboard features. Integrien develops software used by IT managers to find problems with application software.

LeadPoint Extends Into Automotive Leads
Los Angeles-based LeadPoint has extended the firm's lead marketplace into the automotive arena, saying today that it has opened a new lead trading platform for new cars. The offering extends LeadPoint beyond the firm's current mortgage lead exchange service. LeadPoint will focus its new marketplace on new car purchase and auto warranties, and also said it will expand in the next few months to also cover auto finance leads.

Peerless Cuts Staff
El Segundo-based Peerless Systems, a developer of imaging, networking, and printing technology, said last night that it has cut 20 positions company-wide, as the firm looks to better match its resources with its current level of contract activity. Peerless said in a statement that longer-term OEM demand for its core technologies may be software than expected, and that it is looking to mitigate the issues by exploring new sectors in the imaging industry. Breach Ships Open Source Firewall
Carlsbad-based Breach Security has released a version of its security appliance that incorporates the ModSecurity v2.0 open source firewall, the firm said today. The upgraded appliance incorporates the latest security features of the ModSecurity software, including compliance with the September 2006 update to the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards.

IFILM Archives Super Bowl Ads
Los Angeles-based IFILM said yesterday that the firm is again archiving all of the Super Bowl commercials online after they are broadcast February 4th. IFILM, which has offered an online archive of Super Bowl commercials for the past six years, said it will post the commercials online as they air. IFILM is owned by MTV Networks.
