THQ Acquires Game Studio
Agoura Hills-based THQ announced this morning that it has acquired Mass Media, Inc., a Southern California-based game studio, to focus on next-general console development. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Moorpark-based Mass Media has over 50 employees, and has previously developed games from Time Warner Interactive.

Spark Networks Buys HurryDate
Beverly Hills-based Spark Networks, the online dating and personal service, said Thursday that it has acquired the assets of HurryDate, a personals and singles event company. Terms were not disclosed. Spark said it will use the acquisiiton to strengthen the firm's speed dating business. HurryDate offers speed dating events across the U.S. and Canada.

Broadcom Ships Wireless Chip
Irvine-based Broadcom has announced a new, single-chip Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and FM receiver, the firm said today. The new chip is focused on providing wireless connectivity for mobile devices. Broadcom said that the new BCM4325 CMOS system-on-a-chip provides 802.11 a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 support plus enhanced data rate, and a FM receiver. Guidance Software Gets Patent
Pasadena-based Guidance Software reports that it has received a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. Guidance said that its "Automatic Reconnect and Reacquisition in a Computer Investigation System" patent, number 7,168,000, is the second for the firm. According to the patent office filing, the patent was granted January 23rd. Inventors named on the patent were Kimberly Stone-Kaplan and Matthew Steven Garrett. The patent was filed in March of 2006. LightPointe Expands Sales Staff
San Diego-based LightPointe Communications said Thursday that it has added Brian R. Petersil as Director of Customer Service and Strategic Account Sales. The free-space optics (FSO) firm said that Petersil joins the firm from Loea Corporation. LightPointe has recently started expanding the firm's sales efforts, after a restructuring of the business in 2006. LightPointe was shut down in May of 2006, but raised new funding and emerged in October 11 with a new management team and financial backers.

Capstone Turbine Names VP
Chatsworth-based Capstone Turbine has named a new Executive Vice President of Sales, James Crouse, the firm said Thursday. Crouse joins Capstone from Navitas Consulting, and has also served at Valley Power Systems, Stewart & Stevenson, and Crown Engineering. Capstone is a developer of microturbine systems for power generation.

Xencor Adds VP Business Development
Monrovia-based Xencor, a venture backed firm developing protein and antibody therapeutics, said yesterday that it has appointed Jade R. Brown to VP of Business Development. Brown joins the firm from Cell Therapeutics, and also served at Nastech Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly and Company.
