Sientra Scores $85M
Santa Barbara-based Sientra, a medical device developer focused on the plastic surgery and aesthetics medicine area, announced this morning that it has raised $85M in a Series B funding. The funding came from Orbimed Advisors, and also included Clarus Ventures, Goldman Sachs, and TIAA-CREF. The firm said that it has acquired Silimed, a developer of plastic surgery implants, in conjunction with the financing.

Qualcomm Buys Mobile WiMax Product Line
San Diego-based Qualcomm has purchased mobile WiMAX technology from Campbell, California-based TeleCIS Wireless. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. TeleCIS said it sold its 16e WiMax mobile SoC technology to an undisclosed major wireless vendor, which has been reported elsewhere as Qualcomm. TeleCIS Wireless is a developer of WiMAX semiconductors.

Masimo Files For IPO
Irvine-based Masimo has filed for an IPO, saying last night in a filing with the SEC that the firm is looking to raise up to $150M on the NASDAQ as MASI. The firm is a manufacturer of medical devices used for pulse oximetry. The IPO is being underwritten by Piper Jaffray, Deutsche Bank Securities, Cowen and Company, and Thomas Weisel Partners. The firm is backed by INVESCO Private Capital, Steelpoint Capital Partners, DSV Partners, and Franklin Templeton Group.

aTyr Pharma Raises $10.5M
San Diego-based aTyr Pharma, a biopharmaceutical firm focused on protein biologics for human therapeutics, said this morning that it has raised $10.5M in a Series B funding. The round was led by Alta Partners and Polaris Venture Partners. Other investors in the company included Imagene and Cardinal Partners. As part of the funding, David Mack of Alta and Amir Nasaht of Polaris have joined the company's board. QinetiQ Acquires ITS Corporation
Virginia-based QinetiQ, a provider of IT services to the U.S. Government, said this morning that it has completed its acquisition of Oxnard, California-based ITS Corporation, a technology provider for U.S. Government agencies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. QinetiQ said that the acquisition of ITS will provide it with new customers and contract opportunities. ITS provides IT and engineering for the U.S. military, intelligence and homeland security agencies, and other agencies.

Kyocera To Double Solar Module Output
Kyocera, which maintains its North American headquarters in San Diego, reported today that it is planning to expand production of its solar modules to double its current capacity. The increased production is a result of global demand for solar power systems, a result of both increasing consumer awareness of solar power and healthy rebates and tax incentives for the systems, particularly in California. Guidance Software Opens New Office In San Francisco
Pasadena-based Guidance Software, a provider of digital forensics software used for ediscovery, said this morning that it has opened up a new office in San Francisco. The new office includes software and staff and is targeted at enabling e-discovery services for its customers. The new eDiscovery Center is part of an offering from Guidance which allows its customers to use professional services to assist with the electronic discovery. Emulex In Data Integrity Coalition
Costa Mesa-based Emulex is one of a coalition of data storage firms focused on a new data integrity effort. Emulex, LSI, Oracle, and Seagate announced today at Storage Networking World in San Diego, that they are in a technology collaboration to enable end-to-end data integrity for enterprise storage systems. RightsLine Rolls Out Online Licensing Product
Los Angeles-based RightsLine Software said today that it has developed a new, online media licensing solution. The product, "Online Rights Marketplace" provides a way for companies to license their media online. RightsLine said the new software was developed in conjunction with Tryarc LLC, an IT consulting firm which provides systems and customer application development. RightsLine is a provider of business software for licensing content, trademarks, and copyrights.
