Avanoo Takes On Social Wisdom
Venice, California-based Avanoo announced Wednesday that the company has launched a new site focused on community wisdom. The angel funded site said that it will allow anyone to ask or answer questions on the site. The social question and answer site, which was co-founded by Dan Jacobs and Wilford Sage, said that it recently received an angel investment round of financing. SIPphone Releases Local Call Service
San Diego-based SIPphone, the voice-over-IP phone service started by MP3.com's Michael Robertson, announced the release of a calling service targeted at saving on international and long distance calls today. The new service is based on the assignment of local telephone numbers, which are given specifically to friends or businesses to call. Prolacta Bioscience Raises $12M
Monrovia-based Prolacta Bioscience has raised $12M in a funding round, the firm said today, in a round led by Alta Partners. The round also included DFJ Frontier, Arcturus Capital, DFJ Mercury, Funk Ventures, Phillip Capital, Gideon Hixon Fund, and Draper Associates L.P., along with other investors. Prolacta is developing a human milk fortifier made from human milk, for use in neonatal intensive care units. Alison de Bord of Alta Partners has joined the company's board along with the funding.

Local.com Goes Mobile
Irvine-based Local.com, an online local search engine, said today that it has launched a new mobile version of the firm's services. The company said that Local Mobile is a ad-supported, mobile site which allows users to search by keyword and location from their wireless phone or device. The firm is tapping Trilibis Mobile for its mobile services. Local.com provides local business listings and other localized information through its search engine.

Transonic Combustion Gets Second Round
Camarillo-based Transonic Combustion, which is developing an advanced fuel injection system to improving the fuel economy of automobiles, said Tuesday afternoon that it has closed a second round of venture capital funding. The round was led by Venrock, and also included Rustic Canyon and Khosla Ventures. Amount of the funding was not disclosed. Sonos Ships Bundle, Ties Into Pandora
Santa Barbara-based Sonos announced today that it is shipping a new equipment bundle for the firm's popular wireless music systems. THe company said that its new Sonos Bundle 130 includes its Sonos ZonePlayer 80, ZonePlayer 100, and Sonos Controller 100, a complete two-room system. The bundle will retail for $999. Qualcomm To Invest Euro 100 Million In European Ventures
QUALCOMM, the San Diego-based wireless giant, said today that it has committed to invest euro 100 million in European companies offering technologies and services in the wireless arena. The firm said that it will focus on small- to medium-sized enterprises and startups serving the 3G WCDMA market. SMC Networks Licenses WiFi Software
Irvine-based SMC Networks and SolutionInc Limited disclosed this morning that the two companies are in an OEM agreement, which will allow SMC Networks to embed a portion of SolutionInc's proprietary tunneling software technology into one of SMC's wireless cable modem gateways. The deal is targeted at the pay-per-use, public access hotspot market, and allows carriers to offer localized billing, splash pages, and business models independent of the network environment and infrastructure. ESET Signs OEM Agreement
San Diego-based ESET, a provider of threat protection and antivirus software, announced this morning that it is in an OEM agreement with SAFE-PROTECT, a IT security firm based in Paris. ESET said that SAFE-PROTECT has integrated the firm's NOD32 Antivirus software into its network security appliance. Financial details of the OEM agreement were not disclosed. QLogic Ships Blade Networking Card
Aliso Viejo-based QLogic has shipped a new, combination Ethernet and Fibre Channel expansion card for IBM's popular BladeCenter servers, the company said Tuesday. The new combo expansion card combines both a 4GB Fibre Channel and two 1G Ethernet networking ports.
