Mahalo Launches, Raises Capital
Santa Monica-based Mahalo, the newest startup from Weblogs founder Jason McCabe Calacanis, launched today at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in San Diego. The startup said that it is launching an Alpha of a "human-powered search engine", and that it has raised funding from Sequoia Capital, Elon Musk, News Corp, CBS Corporation, and Burda Media. NanoH2O Receives $5M In Funding From Khosla Ventures
Santa Monica-based NanoH2O, a firm commercializing water purification technology spun out of UCLA, has received $5M in funding from Khosla Ventures. The Series A round, which closed in April, will go towards the firm's advanced membrane materials for desalination and water reuse. Clearmesh Shuts Down
Pasadena-based Clearmesh Networks, a firm that was developing wireless optical broadband equipment, has shut down. According to sources close to the company, the firm shut down this month after Idealab, the firm's backer, decided to cut off funding for the company. The company, which was formerly known as Omnilux, was relaunched in June of 2006, but failed to find outside backers outside of Idealab. Aperio Raises $10.6M
Vista, California-based Aperio Technologies announced Wednesday that the firm has raised $10.6M in a new financing round. The round was led by Galen Partners and Advanced Technology Ventures. The company, which develops digital pathology systems for the healthcare and life sciences industry, said that the new capital will go towards expanding sales, marketing, and operations. Fox Interactive Media Acquires Photobucket, Flektor
Los Angeles-based Fox Interactive Media announced today that it has acquired Denver, Colorado-based Photobucket and Culver City-based Flektor. Financial terms of the acquisitions were not disclosed. Photobucket is a popular online photo and video sharing service that allows users to upload and post photos to web sites like MySpace; Flektor provides Web-based tools for creating slideshows, postcards, and video mash-ups. Qualcomm Loses Patent Infringement Suit
San Diego-based wireless giant QUALCOMM has been ordered to pay $19.6M in damages to Irvine-based Broadcom, after a jury found that QUALCOMM's products infringe on three patents owned by Broadcom Corp. The loss came in a lawsuit filed by Broadcom in May of 2005, which alleged that five of its patents had been infringed by Qualcomm. Anacomp Acquires CaseLogistix
San Diego-based Anacomp, a provider of document and business process management, said today that it has completed the acquisition of CaseLogistix, a provider of evidence and litigation management solutions. Eventful Powers Music Tour
San Diego-based Eventful, the online event discovery and listing service, announced this morning that its service will be used by The Vans Warped Tour and Energizer for an upcoming tour. Strix Systems Deploys In Greece
Calabasas-based Strix Systems, a manufacturer of wireless mesh networking hardware, said today that it is deploying its hardware in a municipal mesh network in Galatsi, Greece. Galatsi will use the firm's hardware as part of a fee-based broadband service for residents and businesses. The install comes as part of a 4 sq. km. deployment in the city's center. Veoh, DMGI Partner On Video Distribution
Digital Music Group, a provider of digital distribution of music, television, and film catalogs, said today that it will begin offering its content through San Diego-based Veoh. DMGI controls digital distribution of video content ranging from Gumby and My Favorite Martian to comedy from Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, and Jamie Foxx. Integrien Upgrades IT Operations Software
Irvine-based Integrien has upgraded the firm's IT operations management software, saying Tuesday that it has released a new version of the tool. The firm said that the company's latest Integrien Alive product, version 5.6, adds monitoring of IBM products through IBM Tivoli; Linux support; new JBOSS and WebSphere connectivity; along with other upgrades.
