Websense Gets SurfControl Acquisition Approval
San Diego-based Websense said Thursday afternoon that SurfControl PLC shareholders have approved the firm's proposed acquisition. SurfControl is a provider of software for Web and email security; the deal to acquire SurfControl was announced in April. Websense said that it expects the acquisition to become effective, following a court hearing to sanction the acquisition, on October 3rd. Websense is a developer of web filtering software.

Quartics Gets $7.5M In Debt
Irvine-based Quartics, a developer of wireless video processing chips, has raised $7.5M in venture debt, according to funder Hercules Technology Growth Capital. Hercules said that it provided the debt to provide growth capital for Quartics research and development, as well as expanded sales and marketing at the firm. Quartics is headed by former AST founder Safi Qureshey, and has previously raised venture funding from Enterprise Partners.

The Active Network Acquires InfoSpherix
San Diego-based The Active Network said on Thursday that it has finalized its acquisition of InfoSpherix, in a deal worth $17M in cash. InfoSpherix is a provider of centralized reservations and point-of-sale services for camping, boating, and other public park services. The firm is a subsidiary of Spherix Incorporated, and employes 320 full time employees. The Active Network is a provider of applications and software for the amateur sports and community services area.

Lee Joins Prism Ventures
Peter Lee, most recently an associate at venture capital firm Clearstone Ventures, is joining Prism Venture Partners, a Boston-based venture capital fund. Lee said today in an email that he will be joining Prism Ventures in September, to help the firm grow their Los Angeles office. Prism is an early stage fund headquartered in Boston, which has $1.2B under management.

NextWave Releases WiMax Chipset
San Diego-based NextWave Broadband said Thursday morning that it has begun shipping samples of a new WiMax chipset, which it is targeting at consumer electronics and mobile device manufacturers. The firm's new chipset includes a baseband Systems-on-a-Chip (SoC), along with an RFIC and systems software. The platform is designed to provide the ability to manufacturers to create WiMax terminals. NextWave is a developer of wireless broadband semiconductors.

Acacia Research Names New Director
Newport Beach-based Acacia Research, the patent licensing firm, said earlier this week that it has added William S. Anderson to its board of directors. Anderson is Chairman and CEO of National Beverage Properties, Inc., and is the former EVP of Topa Equities, Ltd. Anderson has also served at O'Melveny & Myers. Acacia acquires patents and licenses those patents to other companies across a wide range of industries.
