Earthlink Announces Major Layoffs, Shrinks Pasadena Presence
Atlanta-based Earthlink announced a corporate restructuring Tuesday afternoon, saying that it will cut 900 jobs nationwide at the ISP. According to Earthlink, it will "substantially reduce" its presence in Pasadena, California, along with other cuts in its Atlanta offices. The firm also said it is closing its Orlando, Florida; Knoxville, Tenn., Harrisburg, Penn., and San Francisco offices. Micro Memory Acquired by VMETRO
Chatsworth-based Micro Memory LLC, a designer of board level signal and image processing and data acquisition products, has been acquired by VMETRO. The firms did not disclose the sale price, but said that VMETRO has acquired 100% of the shares of Micro Memory. Micro Memory develops storage, signal and image procesing, and other products used for real-time, embedded systems. VMETRO said the acquisition will increase its capabilities and product offerings. Interview with Jerry Slavonia, Campus Explorer
Earlier this month, Santa Monica-based Campus Explorer (www.campusexplorer.com) raised its first round of venture funding, for an online site which helps students find colleges and other schools. inQ Raises $5M
Los Angeles-based inQ said today that it has closed a $5M, Series D funding round. The round was led by Emergence Capital, and also included the company's existing investors, Partech International, Dolphin Equity Partners, and Hudson Ventures. socalTECH originally reported the funding round on August 13th. inQ provides outsourced, live chat services targeted at assisting sales to online shoppers. The firm offers live chat engagement when online users are browsing e-commerce web sites.

FastCall411 Adds Advisors
Los Angeles-based FastCall411, which is developing a pay-per-call product for the local search market, said Monday that it has named two local executives to its advisory board. FastCall411 said that Briggs Ferguson, former CEO of Citysearch, and Stuart MacFarlane, from Momentum Venture Management, have joined its advisory board. MacFarlane is the former CEO of Insider Pages and also has served at Idealab; Ferguson headed Citysearch, and also was at Launch Media and EMI Music.

ClipBlast Adds MSN Video
Los Angeles-based web video search site ClipBlast said today that the firm has added content from MSN Video to its online video index. ClipBlast said the alliance with MSN Video allows the firm to automatically index MSN Video content as it becomes available. ClipBlast operates an online site focused on helping users search for web video.

Visual Sciences Upgrades Search Software
San Diego-based Visual Sciences said Monday that it has upgraded the firm's site search software, Visual Sciences Search. The firm said that the upgraded product now supports standardized workflows and presentation templates, and adds geographic searching, autocomplete, and display of related content in context of search results. Smith Micro Adds Stuffit Windows Support
Aliso Viejo-based Smith Micro Software, a publisher of a wide range of software for the wireless and PC market, said Tuesday that it has released a Windows version of its Stuffit Expander product. The new software, which is available as a free download, enables Windows users to open archives from its Stuffit Deluxe archive and compression software. Smith Micro acquired the Stuffit software in July of 2005 when it bought software developer Allume Systems.
