X Prize Foundation Targets The Moon
The X Prize Foundation, the Santa Monica-based foundation behind the Ansari X Prize, said Thursday that it has launched a new prize which targets putting people on the moon. The foundation said that it will offer a $30M prize to a privately funded team which lands a robotic rover on the Moon, and which sends back video, images, and data back to Earth. Guidance Software Gets Win At Lowe's
Pasadena-based Guidance Software, a provider of computer forensics software, said Thursday that it has been selected by home improvement retailer Lowe's Companies for an electronic discovery application. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, however Guidance said that it will provide its Encase eDiscovery Suite for Lowe's to conduct electronic discovery across its U.S. network. Guidance Software's products are used for electronic discovery and law enforcement.

United Online Hires CFO From ValueClick
Woodland Hills-based United Online, the Internet Service Provider that operates the NetZero and Juno Internet access services, said Thursday afternoon that it has appointed Scott H. Ray as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial officer. Ray joins United Online from ValueClick, where he served as its CFO. CytRx Names New CFO
Los Angeles-based CytRx, a biopharmaceuticals firm which is developing small molecule drugs for the treatment of ALS, said earlier this week that it has appointed Mitchell K. Fogelman as the firm's CFO. Fogelman replaces Matthew Natalizio, who has left the firm. Fogelman was most recently at International Aluminum Corporation, and also has been at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. Leap Wireless Shuffles Board
San Diego-based Leap Wireless, a provider of wireless communications services, said Wednesday that James D. Dondero, of investment firm Highland Capital Management, has resigned. Dondero said that the move is something he had been considering in light of his other responsibilities and developments with Leap Wireless. North American Scientific Sells Oncology Business
Chatsworth-based North American Scientific, a provider of radiation therapy products and cancer treatment centers, said earlier this week that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its NOMOS Radiation Oncology business. The deal is worth approximately $3.6M. North American Scientific is selling the unit to Best Medical International. Acacia Technologies Appoints VP
Newport Beach-based Acacia Technologies said earlier this week that it has named a new Vice President of Engineering. Acacia, which licenses technology and patents to other companies, said that Marcel Mahdavi has been named to the position. Mahdavi was previously at mComm Solutions, a provider of mobile wireless products and consulting; he has also served at Sprint Nextel, LLC International, Cingular Wireless, and AT&T.
