Assay Depot Gets $1.8M
San Diego-based Assay Depot said Monday that it has raised $1.8M in a Series A funding round. Investors in the firm were not disclosed. The firm said it will use the funding to launch an online marketplace for pharmaceutical research services. Assay Depot said it is looking to provide a marketplace for industry and academic drug researchers to find pharmaceutical research service providers.

Silver Lake Buys Stake In Mobile Messenger
Los Angeles-based Mobile Messenger said today that middle market investment fund Silver Lake Sumeru has acquired a majority stake in the firm. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Mobile Messenger is a provider of technology and services for managing mobile media distribution and billing. Mobile Messenger was advised by Montgomery & Co. and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP in the deal; Silver Lake Sumeru was advised by Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.

Staccato Communications Raises $17.5M
San Diego-based Staccato Communications, which develops ultra wideband (UWB) wireless chips, said today that it has raised an additional $17.5M in equity financing. The new funding came from Allegis Capital, Bay Partners, Charles River Ventures, Formative Ventures, interwest Partners, and Vision Capital. Staccato said that it will use the funding to launch its first generation, 100nm single-chip products. The Rubicon Project Launches Online Advertising Service
Los Angeles-based The Rubicon Project said today that it has launched its online advertising services site. The firm said that online service will provide website optimization of advertising networks, and is targeted at helping companies generate cash from their site. The new services are available for free to website publishers. The firm is headed by the team which developed L90's adMonitor software.

Vuguru Inks International Distribution Deals for 'Prom Queen'
Beverly Hills-based digital media studio Vuguru, which is headed by ex-Disney head Michael Eisner, said this morning that it has inked two new deals to distribute the firm's content in France and Japan. Vuguru said that French firm Cyber-Group Animation will distribute a French-dubbed version of its "Prom Queen" and "Prom Queen: Summer Heat" online series for mobile, broadband, TV, and home video; Japanese company Rights Entertainment will distribute the U.S. series in Japan. News Corp Appoints Legal Head For Mobile Division
News Corp's Beverly Hills-based mobile entertainment unit, Jamba, said this morning that it it has appointed Jamie Samson as Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for the firm. Jamba said that Samson joins from Fox Licensing and Merchandising, and will supervise its legal staff in its Los Angeles and Berlin offices. Broadcom Gets Design Win With Samsung
Irvine-based Broadcom said Sunday evening that it has begun shipping one of its power management chips with Samsung Electronics. Broadcom said that its power management unit (PMU), system-on-a-chip has been incorporated into Samsung's SGH-3750 mobile phone, which is now shopping in volume production. Financial size of the design win were not disclosed. Broadcom's power management chips are used to manage batter life and power consumption of mobile pho nes and other mobile devices.
