Materia Scores New Deal With Dow Corning
Pasadena-based chemical technology firm Materia has scored a new win with Dow Corning and spinoff Elevance, the firm said this week. According to the company, Elevance, the venture-funded spinout of the company, and Dow Corning will use the firm's metathesis technology for a line of products for use in skin care, color cosmetic, hair care, and underarm products. Legend Films Adds $5M
San Diego-based Legend Films, a provider of film restoration services and owner of the web site RiffTrax.com, said Thursday that it has closed on $5M in a Series E funding. The round was led by Augustus Ventures Limited, and also included Par Investment Partners. Legend Films said it would use the funding to support efforts in 3D conversion technology, its home entertainment business, and for Rifftrax.com. Causecast Launches Social Causes Site
Los Angeles-based Causecast, a new startup focused on promoting causes and non-profits, launched this week at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco. The firm said will "harness the power of pop culture" to help social causes and non-profits. The firm said it is working with celebrity and corporate leaders, including Jenny McCarthy, Russell Simmons, Matthew Modine, the Jennifer Lopez Foundation, Kiva, The Humane Society, Charity Water, Generation Rescue and others. Idealab's EI Solutions Gets Solar Win In Santa Barbara
EI Solutions, the solar integration startup backed by Pasadena-based Idealab, has scored a win in the City of Santa Barbara. According to Tioga Energy, a renewable energy services provider, and EI Solutions, the two are building and funding a 384 kW DC solar electric system for Santa Barbara. The firms said the system will be installed on roof space on the City of Santa Barbara's corporation yard at Garden and Laguna streets. Yammer Gets Top Prize At Tech Conference
Yammer, a Twitter-like spinout out of high profile Los Angeles genealogy firm Geni.com, has scored the top prize at the TechCrunch50 awards in San Francisco. Yammer offers instant messaging focused on internal corporate communications, and is the result of work by engineers at Geni. Geni is the online, Web 2.0-style genealogy and social networking web site headed up by former PayPal founder David Sacks; the firm is venture backed by Charles River Ventures and Founders Fund.
