X1 Technologies Hires Marketing Head
Pasadena-based X1 Technologies announced Monday that it has appointed a new Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. The firm said it has appointed John Maxwell to the position, to lead the marketing initiatives for the firm. According to X1, Maxwell joins the company from MTI Technology, where he also served at VP of Marketing. Maxwell has also served at Veritas Software and Sun Microsystems. X1 is a maker of enterprise search software for finding documents.

Boeing Buys San Diego Software Services Firm
Tapestry Solutions, a San Diego-based provider of services and software for tracking equipment and spare parts for the U.S. Department of Defense, has been acquired by The Boeing Company, Boeing said late last week. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Boeing said that the acquisition will accelerate the growth of the company's service and support business. U.S. Recognizes Southern California Technology Innovators
Several Southern California technology innovators from Southern California were recognized this morning in a ceremony at the White House, at the 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation awards. In a ceremony today, President George W. Bush awarded the 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation to a number of companies and individuals, including a number of Southern California technology pioneers. Comarco Sells Wireless Test Business
Lake Forest-based Comarco announced Monday that it has agreed to sell its wireless test solutions business to Ascom Holdings A.G, in a deal worth approximately $12.75M in cash. Comarco said the sale is part of its strategy to focus its business on its mobile power solutions. Comarco said the divestiture should "dramatically" reduce its operating costs. Uber Shuts Down
Los Angeles-based Uber, the online social networking web site run by former Friendster CEO Scott Sassa, has shut down. According to the firm's web site, as of September 29, the firm's investors have decided to stop supporting the site, and the company has closed its doors. Uber blamed the crisis in the economy for the shutdown. Uber developed software used to upload, organize, and share content through a free web site; the site also provided photo galleries, slide shows, videos, and blogs.

SpaceX Finally Hits Orbit, On Fourth Try
Hawthorne-based SpaceX, which is developing private space launch vehicles, has finally hit orbit with its fourth try. According to SpaceX, its Falcon 1 launch vehicle successfully launched and achieved Earth orbit last night. The firm, which is looking to create more affordable space launch vehicles, said that its Falcon 1 vehicle lifted off at 4:15PM Sunday evening, carrying a dummy payload. SOA Software Expands In Europe
Los Angeles-based SOA Software, a provider of software used for controlling and managing service oriented architecture (SOA) software projects, said this morning that the firm is expanding in the European market. SOA Software said it has hired Wolf Gilbert to lead "rapid expansion" into Europe. Gilbert joins from Microsoft, and becomes the firm's Vice President for European operations. NextWave Wireless Shuts GO Networks Operations
San Diego-based NextWave Wireless said today that it is discontinuing the operations of the firm's GO Networks unit, which developed wide area Wi-Fi networking equipment. NextWave said it has submitted a request in Israel to seek bankruptcy protection for the unit's Tel Aviv subsidiary. Ixia Intros 100 GigE Testing Equipment
Calabasas-based network testing hardware provider Ixia announced today that the firm is slated to begin shipping new hardware for 100 Gigabit Ethernet testing. According to Ixia, its new 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) Development Accelerator will provide layer-2 traffic generation and analysis to companies. The new systems will begin shipping in mid-November. Capstone Hires Chilean Distributor
Chatsworth-based Capstone Turbine, a developer of microturbine systems for producing energy, said Monday that the firm has signed KLIMA, Distribuidora y Comercial Termica Ltda., a distributor of products in the country of Chile. According to Capstone, Santiago, Chile-based KLIMA will sell Capstone's products to HVAC contractors and others in Chile. Capstone said that KLIMA is the largest energy consulting firm and provider of Heating Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems in Chile.

DivX Gets Pioneer Win
San Diego-based DivX, a developer of codec technology for encoding digital video, said Monday that the firm's technology is being included in four new Blu-ray players from Pioneer. Financial impact of the design wins were not disclosed. According to DivX, Pioneer has included the firm's technology in the BDP-LX71, BDP-LX08, BDP-51FD Blue-ray players. DivX licenses its encoding/decoding technology to consumer electronics firms.
