Broadcom Eyes Acquisition Bargains
Irvine-based Broadcom is eyeing technology companies it can buy at a bargain, the firm's CFO said on an analyst call this week. According to Eric Brandt, Senior Vice President and CFO of the firm on a call Monday, it is looking for acquisitions as opportunities arise. Holiday Spending Up In December, So Far
December sales at e-commerce sites are up by 7 percent from last year, despite the dismal economic conditions, according to the latest numbers released by comScore. comScore, which tracks e-commerce sales and Internet traffic, said today that sales in the first week of December (Dec 1 through Dec 7) totaled $4.45 billion, up 7 percent versus last year. MySpace Launches Browser Toolbar
Los Angeles-based MySpace said Wednesday that it has officially launched its new MySpace Toolbar, an add-on for Internet Explorer 6.0 and Firefox 2.0 which directly connects MySpace users to their accounts. According to MySpace, the new tool--which it developed internally--allows users to receive real-time alerts and notifications from the site. CircleUp Launches Group Communications Tool, Links With Active Network
Newport Beach-based CircleUp, which provides Web 2.0-style group messaging services, said today that it has launched a new platform to help groups communicate with their members. The new platform--billed SmartMessage--helps groups send messages among members and others. As part of the announcement, CircleUp said it has linked with San Diego-based Active Network's eteamz division, which will deploy the new tool throughout its web sites. Big Stage Opens API
Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment, which is developing 3D avatar technology, said today that it has opened up its proprietary 3-D facial modeling system to third parties. Conexant Acquires PC Audio Technology, Engineering Team
Newport Beach-based Conexant Systems said today that it has signed an agreement with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) to manufacture, distribute, and support ADI's PC audio codec product lines, including the hiring of ADI's PC audio engineering support team. Hulu Taps SplashCast For Video Embedding
Los Angeles-based Hulu, which offers TV shows, movies, and clips from the major networks, is adding the ablity to embed Hulu clips on social networking sites such as and Facebook, in a new deal with content syndication service SplashCast. According to SplashCast, Hulu will use SplashCast to distribute its television shows and other content on and Facebook, as a way to reach the 15- to 34- year old audience. Emotive Gets $6.25M, Buys Sennari
Los Angeles-based Emotive Communications, which is developing ringtone-based, entertainment products for the mobile market, said today that it has scored $6.25M in a second round of venture financing. The round was led by The Mayfield Fund, and also included prior investors D. E. Shaw Ventures and Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments. Novatel Wireless Loses President
San Diego-based Novatel Wireless, which develops broadband modems for connecting PCs and other devices to cell phone networks, said this morning that its President, Brad Weinert, has resigned, as of Monday. Reason for the sudden departure was not given. According to the firm, the Weinert's responsibilities will be taken over by the company's senior management team. Verari Launches Leasing Program
San Diego-based blade computing provider Verari Systems is targeting its customers with a new leasing program it is billing the "Green Leasing Program." According to the firm, its Verari Financial services group will provide leasing services to its customers, including asset acquisition and financing, asset management, trade-ins, and energy credit incentive programs.
