Nirvanix Gains $5M
San Diego-based Nirvanix, a provider of Internet-based storage services, has raised $5M out of a $6M venture capital funding round, according to a regulatory filing. The filing, which was filed Friday, said that the funding came April 3rd. Details of the funding were not disclosed. Nirvanix is venture backed by European Founders Fund, Intel Capital, Mission Ventures, Valhalla Partners, and Windward Ventures.

X Prize Foundation To Set $10M Health Care Competition Rules
The X PRIZE Foundation, the Playa Vista-based nonprofit using multimillion dollar prizes to drive innovation, said Thursday that the firm will announce the initial prize parameters for its $10M+, Healthcare X PRIZE next week. According to the firm, the parameters for the prize--which is focused on improving health care--were developed by a group of prominent health care providers, thought-leaders, and academic and political advisors. NTS Gets Defense Win
Calabasas-based National Technical Systems, a provider of engineering services to the defense, aerospace, communications, and other markets, said Thursday that the firm has gained an award from the Naval Surface Warefare Center (NSWC), Indian Head Division. According to NTS, the contract covers engineering services and rapid response testing support for research, development, testing, and evaluation of components, equipments, and systems for the Department of Defense.

Toshiba America Business Solutions Names CEO
Irvine-based Tosihba America Business Solutions, the business unit of Toshiba which manages the firm's copiers, fax, printing, and other products in the U.S., said Thursday that it has named Masahiro Yamada as the firm's Chairman and CEO. According to the firm, Yamada has been at Toshiba since 1985, and was most recently deputy General Manager in the firm's Japanese Document Systems Business Group, overseeing American and European MFP operations.
