Abraxis Invests In Biotech Firm
Los Angeles-based Abraxis BioScience, a biotechnology firm focused on treatments for cancer and other illnesses, is the lead investor in a Maryland-firm developing technology for tissue protein analysis. According to Rockville, Maryland-based Expression Pathology, Abraxis led a $6.5M, funding for the firm. Abraxis Senior Vice President of Integrative Medicine and Translational Science, Lex Van der Ploeg, sits on the board of Expression Pathology.

Autobytel Gets Acquisition Offer
Irvine-based Autobytel, which operates a number of online sites focused on buying and selling cars, said late Tuesday morning that the firm has received an unsolicited offer to acquire the company. According to Autobytel, the bid--from Infield Acquisition, Inc., Trilogy Enterprises, Inc. and Trilogy, Inc.--is worth $0.35 in cash for each share of the firm's common stock. Nirvanix Hires Three With Enterprise Focus
San Diego-based Nirvanix, a venture-backed provider of storage-as-a-service, announced Tuesday that the firm has bolstered its staff with three storage experts focused on the enterprise and IT business. The firm said it has hired on Stephen Foskett as Director of Consulting, Arvind Gidwani as Director of Solutions Services, and Brian Schwarzentruber as Solutions Architect. Big Stage Adds New Content From GGL Global Gaming
Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment, the startup which uses photos to create animated, 3-D facial avatars of users, has added new content from a game from GGL Global Gaming. Big Stage told its users yesterday that they could now insert their avatars into content from Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, a video game published by Funcom. ReachLocal Creates Ad Marketplace
Woodland Hills-based ReachLocal has launched a new, online marketplace for local advertising, saying Monday that it has created a new "ReachLocal Xchange" platform which will allow websites to tap into local advertisers. Katalyst Media Ties With Ustream, Sets Season Finale
Hollywood-based Katalyst Media, the content production firm of Ashton Kutcher, announced a live streaming deal with Ustream, and release of the firm's KatalystHQ season finale. Broadcom Looks To Acquire Emulex In Hostile Bid
Irvine-based Broadcom said this morning that it is offering to acquire another large, Orange County electronics manufacturer, Emulex Corporation, for approximately $764M in cash. Broadcom, which is a manufacturer of high speed networking and other semiconductors, said it was offering $9.25 per share in cash, for Costa Mesa-based Emulex, which makes storage area networking components, semiconductors, and related products.
