Cytori Therapeutics Gains $4.2M in PIPE
San Diego-based Cytori Therapeutics said Thursday that it has raised approximately $4.2M in a private placement with undisclosed investors. The publicly held firm said the funding will go towards sales and marketing of its products. Cytori is developing products used for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, as well as for stem cell research.

Hulu Goes Bollywood
Online video service Hulu has started carrying Bollywood movies, and has signed digital distributor Saavn to show a number of Bollywood films from India. According to Saavn, it will offer five titles from India, including "Sarkar", a 2005 version of "The Godfather." Financial terms of the distribution deal were not disclosed. According to Saavn, its films will include English subtitles. All five titles are currently available on the Hulu site.

Evolver Launches Avatar Site
Aliso Viejo-based Evolver, a firm developing avatar creation technology, launched an alpha of its web site this week, focused on helping consumers create their own virtual avatars. Evolver is headed by former Vicon Motion Capture CEO Brian Nilles, who said the company is looking to help make high quality, 3D human modeling available to pre-teen level consumers. Cornerstone OnDemand Targets Mid-Sized Firms
Santa Monica-based Cornerstone OnDemand, a developer of software for talent and human resources management, announced today that it has rolled out a new version of its product targeted at the mid-size business market. The firm said the new version is focused on meeting the needs of small- and mid-sized businesses with up to 1,500 employees. 60Frames Shuts Down
Los Angeles-based 60Frames, an online entertainment studio developing professionally produced, online content, has reportedly shut down, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 60Frames had raised $3.5M in funding in 2007, from Tudor Investment Corporation and the Pilot Group, and was apparently unable to raise a second round of financing. 60Frames had been incubated within the United Talent Agency and Spot Runner.

Qualcomm Launches Entrepreneurship Prize
San Diego-based Qualcomm disclosed today that it has launched a new, entrepreneurship prize which will provide $550,000 in seed funding to entrepreneurs in North America, Europe, China, and India. According to Qualcomm, its new business plan competition--the Qualcomm Ventures QPrize competition--is aimed at promoting innovation in the wireless industry.
