Microsemi To Shut Plant
Irvine-based Microsemi, a manufacturer of mixed signal integrated circuits, reported Wednesday that the firm will shut a manufacturing facility it runs in Scottsdale, Arizona. The firm said the move will save it from $20M to $25M annually. According to the firm, it is targeting the shutdown of the plant by April of 2011. The company did not say how many employees would be affected by the move, however, it said it would transfer the remaining product lines at that plant to its other facilities.

Vangard Voice Systems Wins Defense Contract
Irvine-based Vangard Voice Systems, a developer of software for voice-enabling enterprise applications, announced today that it has scored a subcontract to voice enable warehouse applications used by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). Financial details of the one year contract were not disclosed by Vangard, however, a federal contract filing has the contract valued at $230,856.26. M86 Security Gains Patent
Orange-based M86 Security, a developer of web security software, reported today that it has received a U.S. Patent for its malware detection technology. The patent, number 7,607,171, is entitled "Virus detection by executing e-mail code in a virtual machine" and names Walter L. Marsden and David E. Green as inventors; it appears the patent stems from M86 Security's acquisition of Avinti, a malware detection firm, in March of 2009. Helixis Bumps Funding To $7.3M
Carlsbad-based Helixis, a developer of nucleic acid analysis tools, has upped its recent funding round to $7.3M, according to a filing from the firm this week. The funding is a continuation of a $10.0M venture round which the firm has been raising since July. Source of the new funding was not disclosed. Helixis has previously received funding from Advanced Technology Ventures, Domain Associates, and Okapi Venture Capital. Helixis is a spinout of Caltech.

Energy Innovations Reports Efficiency Gains
Pasadena-based Energy Innovations, a developer of concentrating solar modules, is now shipping modules with 29% conversion efficiency, the firm revealed last week, about double the average efficiency of standard, flat PV systems. According to the firm, the much higher efficiency for its system comes from the use of its silicone-on-glass (SoG) Fresnel lenses, advanced secondary optics, and use of high-efficiency, triple junction cells for its systems. Aspyra To Delist Stock
Westlake Village-based Aspyra said Tuesday afternoon that the firm is voluntarily delisting its common stock from the AMEX. The firm, which is listed at APY, said it intends to deslist due to limited trading in its common stock, the costs of preparing and filing reports with the SEC, and because the typical advantages of being a public company--including access to capital and use of equity to acquire other businesses--is not currently sufficiently available to justify continued listing. RealD, Eyewear Firm in Deal
Los Angeles-based RealD, a developer of 3D projection hardware for movie theaters, has inked a deal with an Australian eyewear firm to create premium, stylish glasses, the firms said today. According to RealD and Look3D, they are in a licensing agreement where Look3D will design, manufacture, and distribute a line of 3D glasses in varoius shapes and styles.
