Venture Firm: We Missed That Networks In Motion Deal
OVP Venture Partners, a venture firm in Oregon and Washington, is highlighting its latest "missed deal" in Aliso Viejo-based Networks In Motion. NIM, which was acquired last week for $170M, had been backed by venture firms Redpoint Ventures, Mission Ventures, and Sutter Hill Ventures. M86 Security Rebrands Finjan Products
Orange-based M86 Security, a developer of web security products, said Thursday that it has relaunched its products from its acquisition of Finjan, under the new M86 Security Secure Web Gateway brand. M86 acquired Finjan in November. The firm said the new products will be available in the first quarter of 2010. M86 claims the addition of Finjan has made it the largest worldwide Web security appliance vendor, with over $47M in combined web security appliance revenue in 2008, exceeding competitors (More info...)

Pfenex Spins Out From Dow Chemical With $24M
San Diego-based Pfenix, a new startup focused on biotechnology technology for producing proteins, has spun out of Dow Chemical Company, Pfenex said this week. As part of the spinout, the firm has received $24M in a Series A funding round. The funding was led by Signet Healthcare Partners. The amount was disclosed from a regulatory filing Wednesday. Lottay Launches Bad Gifts Site
Los Angeles-based Lottay, the online gifting firm recently funded by DFJ Frontier, has launched a new site today focused on highlighting bad gifts. The firm's new site--MyWorstGiftEver.com--highlights and allows users to submit pictures and a description of what they think is the worst gift they ever got. The company said that userse can anonymously share what they think was their worst gift, and also vote for the worse gift listed on the site. Rippol Removes Logins, Rolls Lightweight Site
San Diego-based Rippol, a startup which is looking to use social networking information to help users discover new videos and online shows, has quietly rolled out a new "lightweight" version of its site, and has removed requirements to login and register with the site to view videos. The firm said the lightweight site has been up for a few days, but is still in the midst of design refinement. Gogii Raises $8.2M
Marina del Rey-based Gogii, a developer of text messaging applications, said Thursday that it has raised $8.2M in a Series B investment round. The round was led by Matrix Partners, and also included prior investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Gogii is the latest startup of Scott Lahman, Austin Murray, and Zack Norman, all previously at JAMDAT Mobile. Semtech Completes Sierra Monolithics Buy
Camarillo-based Semtech reported Wednesday afternoon that it has completed its acquisition of Sierra Monolithics, a maker of analog ICs for the communications and defense market. The deal was worth $180M. The acquisition was originally announced November 18th. Semtech said the acquisition will expand its high performance, analog competencies and portfolio.
