Spark.com Looks To Snag Rejected Online Daters
Beverly Hills-based online dating firm Spark.com is looking to take advantage of the flap over controversial dating site BeautifulPeople.com, which this week said it is kicking "fatties" off the site. Spark.com said this week that it will offer free subscriptions to anyone ousted from BeautifulPeople.com, which claims to only list "beautiful" people on its site. Websense Reports Strong Demand, Ups Estimates
San Diego-based Websense, a developer of web security products, said Wednesday that it is seeing strong demand for the firm's new Web Security Gateway and appliances, and is also benefiting from currency exchange rates, and upped its guidance range Wednesday. According to the firm, it has been seeing growing demand for its product for the last five quarters--pushing its expected, full year operating cash flow to more than $90M, up from its guidance of $80M. PacketVideo Launches Android Media Server
San Diego-based PacketVideo said today at CES that it is launching a version of its TwonkyMedia server, specifically for Android handsets. The firm said its new TwonkyServer Mobile, which will be available for free, and will allow users to share video, music, and photos on their Android handsets. The firm already provides its software to consumer electronics manufacturers.

D2 In Android, Residential Gateway Partnerships
Santa Barbara-based D2 Technologies, a developer of embedded IP communication software, announced two different partnerships this week at CES, saying that it has linked with NetLogic Microsystems on an Android product, and separately, that it has partnered with Opulan on a product for the residential gateway market. Fandango Launches Blackberry, Android Apps
Los Angeles-based Fandango, the online movie information and ticketing firm now owned by Comcast Interactive Media, has rolled out two mobile applications this week at CES. According to Fandango, it launched a new movie information, showtime, and ticketing app for BlackBerry phones, which is available for free for the BlackBerry Tour, Bold, Storm, Curve, and 8800. Qualcomm, Broadcom Behind Google's Nexus One
Several of the major semiconductor components behind this week's launch of the Google Nexus One phone are actually from Southern California companies, Qualcomm and Broadcom, teardowns of the phone are showing. In those teardowns, it appears that Qualcomm's QSD8250 "Snapdragon" 1GHz ARM processor is the main processor being used in Google's phone, along with a number of other Qualcomm components, and it appears Broadcom is powering the Nexus One's Bluetooth and 802.11n wireless, with its BCM4329 (More info...)

RealD Links With Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, DIRECTV
Beverly Hills-based 3D technology provider RealD said today that it has signed agreements with Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, and DIRECTV, around support of its RealD format on new, 3D televisions. RealD said the agreements include supporting its stereoscopic RealD format on Sony LCD TVs, JVC LCD monitors, Samsung 3D TVs, Toshiba REGZA LCD TVs, and Panasonic's 3D VIERA TVs. Kaai Unveils Green Laser Diodes
Goleta-based Kaai, the stealthy, Khosla Ventures-backed startup started by blue LED inventor Shuji Nakamura, announced this morning that it is developing green laser diodes. The firm said it is displaying green laser diodes at 523nm, based on INGaN semiconductor technology, as well as blue laser diodes privately at CES. Hydra Launches Education Site
Beverly Hills-based online advertising network Hydra is targeting the education market, saying today that it has launched a new vertical website, MyDegreeFinder.com, specifically aimed at students looking for higher education degree programs. Hydra said the new site will provide information and resources for those students, including a directory of schools and information on schools that might interest them.

Marlin Equity Partners Buys Life Sciences Software Firm
Los Angeles-based private equity firm Marlin Equity Partners has acquired Pennsylvania-based Liquent, a developer of software and services for the life sciences industry, from Thomson Reuters. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Liquuent develops information management software for life sciences companies. Marlin has over $1 billion of capital under management.
