Southwest Shutdown Snarls Tech Commuters
Many commuters and executives who fly between Southern California and Silicon Valley were stymied by a massive shutdown of flights by Southwest Airlines Thursday afternoon, after high winds and heavy rain prompted the airline to cancel travel to and from Burbank, Ontario, Orange County, and San Diego airports. San Diego Zoo Hits Google Maps
The San Diego Zoo said Thursday afternoon that the zoo is the first zoo in the United States which will be featured in Google's Street View feature. According to the Zoo, Google Maps now features street level views of the zoo's trails and exhibits--including every visitor pathway and animal exhibit. Google's Street View feature allows users of the search engine's mappng service to see wraparound views of streets and roads from ground level. USC Spinouts Raised $148M In Last Two Years, Says University
The University of Southern California is reporting today that spinouts out of the school have raised $148m in the last two calendar years (2008-2009), and that there are now at least 24 USC spinouts currently in business. The school--which has been actively encouraging startup activity based on its research in recent years--said that 16 USC startups raised $148M, in a combination of new startup funding and additional rounds of financing for those companies. SolarFlare Goes Beyond Silicon, Launches Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Irvine-based SolarFlare, a developer of Gigabit Ethernet silicon, has expanded its offerings beyond silicon into the Gigabit Ethernet adapter market, the firm announced today. The firm--which previously only sold its Gigabit Ethernet semiconductors to OEMs and others--said the move came as a result from "persistent demand" from Fortune 100 companies for server adapters. Elevation Pharmaceuticals Gains $30M
San Diego-based Elevation Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceuticals firm developing treatments for repiratory diseases, said Thursday that it has closed on $30M of Series A funding. The funding came from Canaan Partners, TPG Growth, Care Capital, and Mesa Verde Venture Partners. Demand Media Wins Toyota
Santa Monica-based Demand Media, the online media firm run by Richard Rosenblatt, disclosed today that the firm has signed on auto manufacturer Toyota as a customer. Demand Media said it has partnered with Toyota and ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi LA, to provide content to a new interactive community site aimed at off road aficianados, TrailTracker. Verari Founder Buys Assets
The founder of defunct Verari Systems, David Driggers, said this week that an investor group he leads has purchased "substantially all" of Verari Systems' corporate and intellectual property assets. EA Mobile Targets Amazon's Kindle
Los Angeles-based EA Mobile, the mobile game publishing arm of Electronic Arts, has set its sights on a new platform for its mobile games: Amazon's Kindle. Citrix Online In Deal With FranklinCovey
Santa Barbara-based Citrix Online, which operates the GoToMyPC remote desktop software and GoToMeeting web conferencing service, said today that it has linked in a partnership with FranklinCovey. FranklinCovey is a publisher of scheduling, planning, and organization tools.
