Blizzard Launches Beta Of StarCraft Sequel
Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment said Wednesday that the firm has launched a beta test of the firm's real-time strategy game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. The new, massively multiplayer online game is a sequel to the firm's 1998 strategy game StrCraft. Blizzard said it expects to ship StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in the first half of the year, and has invited thousands of gamers to provide feedback on the firm's beta.

United Online Continues To See Dialup Shrink
Woodland Hills-based United Online reported its fourth quarter and full year 2009 results Wednesday afternoon, saying that its communications segment--which includes its dial-up ISP business--had a revenue drop of 19 percent in Q4 compared with Q4 of 2008, dropping to $48.4M from the prior year's $60.1M. The firm's overall revenues totaled $249.5M in Q4 of 2009, down from the $256.2M in revenues it reported for Q4 of 2008, but the firm reported a profit of $32.8M for the quarter. Cognition In Licensing Deal With Microsoft
Los Angles-based Cognition Technologies, the developer of semantic, natural language processing technology focused on the Internet search area, is reporting a win with Microsoft's Bing search engine today. The firm--which is headed by Scott Jarus--said it has licensed some of its proprietary semantic technologies to Microsoft Corp. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Report: Tesla Employees Die In Crash of Plane Headed to LA
Three executives of Tesla Motors, the high profile electric car firm setting up operations in Los Angeles, apparently have died in a plane crash in Palo Alto, as they were heading towards Hawthorne Municipal Airport in Los Angeles. Blizzard Entertainment Gives $1.1M To Make-A-Wish Foundation
Demonstrating the sheer money making power of the online gaming space, Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment is making a $1.1M donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nonprofit which helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. ecoATM Gets Funding
San Diego-based ecoATM, a developer of automated kiosks for recycling cell phones and other electronics, said this morning that it has raised a first institutional round of funding. The round came from TAO Venture Partners, the new venture firm run by Tom Clancy. Amount of funding was not disclosed. Emulex Wins Compellant
Costa Mesa-based Emulex, a maker of host bus adapters and other storage networking gear, said today that the firm's 8Gb/s HBAs have been selected by storage provider Compellant. Financial details of the win were not disclosed. Emulex said that Compellant will use its 8Gb/s LightPulse Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) in its Storage Center SAN product.

TrueCar Launches Mobile Site
Los Angeles-based TrueCar, the online car pricing site run by Scott Painter, said today that it has launched a mobile version of its site. According to the company, the new site runs on Apple iPhone, BlackBerry, and other web-enabled mobile devices. TrueCar said the site is accessible either by going to its main url, or to its mobile site at TrueCar is a spinout of Zag Automotive, which is also run by Painter.

Fallbrook Technologies Files For IPO
San Diego-based Fallbrook Technologies, a developer of continuous variable transmissions aimed at the electric vehicle market, has filed for an IPO, saying Tuesday evening in a filing that it is looking to raise up to $50M in an offering. The IPO is being underwritten by CIBC and Mackie Research Capital. Fallbrook is venture backed by Robeco Group, NGEN Partners, and others. Tioga Pharmaceuticals Riases $18M
San Diego-based Tioga Pharmaceuticals said today that it has raised $18M in a new equity funding. The funding came from Forward Ventures, New Leaf Venture Partners, BB Biotech Ventures, and Genesys Capital Partners. According to Tioga, the new funding will go to fund a Phase 3 trial of its compound for treating irritable bowel syndrome. Yardi Buys RentGrow
Santa Barbara-based Yardi Systems, a developer of real estate investment management and property management software, said late Tuesday that it has acquired RentGrow, a developer of resident screening services for the property management industry. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. RentGrow is based in Waltham, Mass. Yardi said it use the purchase of RentGrow to offer resident screening as part of its Yardi Multifamily Suite.
