Verve Powers AP's iPad Efforts
San Diego-based Verve Wireless, the developer of the Associate Press's mobile phone applications, may benefit from the AP's announcement last week of a new business unit specifically targeted at taking advantage of the Apple iPad. Verve confirmed that it is powering the back end of the news organizations's new iPad effort, as it currently does all of the AP's other mobile products. Perfect Market Names Chief Strategy Officer
Altadena-based Perfect Market, which is backed by Idealab, said this morning that it has hired on Robertson Barrett as Chief Strategy Officer at the company. Barrett joins from Tribune Interactive, where he was Executive Vice President heading up latimes.com, chicagotribute.com, baltimoresun.com, and the newspaper publisher's other online properties. Movieclips.com Opens Up API, Goes International
Santa Monica-based Movieclips.com, an online site which allows users to search for scenes from major movies, and embed them on Facebook, MySpace, and other web sites, said today that it has opened up its service to users worldwide. The firm also said it has released an API to allow developers to access the firm's clips and related metadata. The startup says it has around 12,000 movie clips from major Hollywood studios on its site.

Central Desktop Sees Growth, Targets 50 Employees By Year End
Pasadena-based Central Desktop, a provider of online, software-as-a-service project management tools and applications, is in the midst of a growth spurt, says CEO Isaac Garcia. The firm, which currently has 34 employees, is targeting at least 50 employees by the end of the year, Garcia told socalTECH over the weekend. LiveOffice Adds SharePoint Archiving
Torrance-based LiveOffice, a provider of email archiving services, said today that it has added Microsoft SharePoint archiving to its slate of offerings. LiveOffice said it will offer the new service for a flat monthly price, including unlimited storage of documents, and also integrate those SharePoint archives into its legal discovery and compliance offerings. The firm did not disclose pricing, but said it would be priced per user, per month.

Awarepoint Gets $10M
San Diego-based Awarepoint, a developer of wireless remote monitoring services for hospitals, announced today that it has raised $10M in a expansion capital round. According to Awarepoint, the new round of funding was led by JAFCO Ventures, and also included prior investors Cardinal Partners and Venrock Associates. Awarepoint's systems are used to track equipment and people within hospitals.

Tech Coast Angels: 7 New Deals, 17 Follow-On Investments In 2009
The Tech Coast Angels said today that the angel group invested in seven new deals, and seventeen follow-on deals in 2009, a total of $4.7M in investments. The group said that as part of those deals, its portfolio companies raised an additional $57M in funding from venture capital groups and other angel investors. Los Angeles-based Internships.com said this morning that it has launched a new web site focused on helping college students to connect with internship opportunities. The firm--the newest venture headed by Robin D. Richards, the former CEO of NTI Group and former President of MP3.com, said it will allow students to search for internship opportunities and jobs. Telcentris Expands Channel
San Diego-based TelCentris, an operator of a unified communications service, said today that it has signed a Master Agent agreement with Sandler Partners, a telecommunications reseller. The firm said that Sandler will resell its hosted IP-PBX, SIP trunking, hosted contact center, and wholesale carrier services.

Valeant Links With Spear Pharmaceuticals
Aliso Viejo-based Valeant Pharmaceuticals said today that it has entered into an agreement with Spear Pharmaceuticals, where the firm will commercialize a cream used to reduce wrinkles and fade irregular pigmentation due to sun damage. Valeant said it will pay $12M to spear plus share in net profits on the deal. The deal covers Spear's Refissa prescription topical tretinoin cream.

DTS Taps Motorola For CTO
Calabasas-based DTS, a developer of surround sound technology, said today that it has named Dr. Frederick Kitson as the firm's EVP and Chief Technology Officer. Kitson joins from Motorola, where he was Corporate VP and head of Research and Development of the firm's Applied Research Center. Kitson has also served at Hewlett Packard.
