Herway Puts Women in Charge of Dating
A new San Diego-based online dating site, HerWay.com said Tuesday that it has launched, putting the control of online dating in the hands of women. The site--which says it is the first dating site where "women take the lead"--said it lets women initiate and control the contact with men, avoiding issues with women being inundated with unsolicited messages from potential suitors. Inphi Adds To Board
Inphi Corp, the developer of high speed analog semiconductors which has major operations in Westlake Village, said today that it has added Peter J. Simone to its board of directors. Simone also sits on the boards of Cymer, Monotype Imaging Holdings, Newport Corporation, and Veeco Instruments. He has previously served at SpeedFam-IPEC, Active Control Experts, and Xionics Document Technologies. Boingo Promotes Samsung Wi-Fi With Contest
Los Angeles-based Boingo Wireless, which operates a network of global Wi-Fi hotspots, is promoting its new deal to bundle its service with Samsung's new Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras with a new contest, the firm announced Tuesday. Boingo said it is giving away a number of the Samsung ST5500/CL80 digital cameras--plus three months of Wi-Fi service--to help kick off its Wi-Fi offering for Samsung's digital cameras to photographers. Mobile-XL Wins Mobile Phone Manufacturer
Los Angeles-based Mobile-XL, which provides SMS-based news and information services for customers in countries with limited or expensive Internet access, said today that it has partnered with TCT Mobile to embed its XLBrowser in a series of Alcatel handsets. Stroome Scores $200K From Journalism Contest
Los Angeles-based Stroome, which is developing an online community for collaborative video editing, announced today that it has just won $200,000 from the 2010 Knight News Challenge. The Knight News Challenge is a contest which helps to fund digital news experiments and technology. Steamboat Ventures Boosts Playdom
Burbank-based Steamboat Ventures, the venture capital firm funded by Walt Disney Co., is one of the backers of Bay Area social gaming firm Playdom. According to Playdom, Steamboat--along with Bessemer Venture Partners and New World Ventures--have invested in the firm as part of a new, $33M venture capital funding round. Sonos Connects To iPad
Santa Barbara-based Sonos, which develops a user-friendly audio streaming device for the whole house, said today that it has introduced a new Sonos Controller app for the Apple iPad. Sonos, which is known for its very user friendly devices for streaming music from both the Internet and a user's PC to different rooms in a house, said the Sonos Controller will allow users to control their Sonos ZonePlayer from their iPad. uSamp Gets $10M In Series C
Encino-based uSamp, the online market research and sampling firm founded by former goZing founders Matt Dusig and Gregg Lavin, said today that it has raised $10M in a Series C funding. The funding was led by OpenView Venture Partners. According to uSamp, the funding will go towards acquisitions, development of its next-generation panel management platform, for its operations, and social media technology enhancements. RealD Powers Toy Story 3
Los Angeles-based RealD, which develops 3D theater projection systems, reported today that it delivered approximately $47M of the $109M in domestic box office from Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 3 title, which opened this weekend. RealD said that theatres outfitted with its 3D cinema systems generated the majorit of 3D box office and a larger box office than all of the 2D screens showing the new film. San Diego-based DexCom, a developer of continuous glucose monitoring systems, said today that it has named Steven R. Pacelli as its Chief Operating Officer, and Jorge Valdes as Chief Technology Officer. Regulus Therapeutics in Deal With Sanofi-Aventis
Carlsbad-based Regulus Therapeutics, a biopharmaceuticals firm focused on microRNA, and Sanofi-Aventis, said today that the two are in a global strategic alliance worth potentially over $750 million.
