Goleta Businesses Rally For San Jose Flights
A group of businesses and local organizations in Goleta, California, north of Santa Barbara, are looking to rally more businesses to join in their effort to spur new, direct flight support to San Jose, California, after a loss of the service in February. In an effort supported by the Goleta Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Barbara Airport and local technology firm Citrix Online, the groups said they're trying to reach out to local businesses to try to address the issue in a forum later this month. SoCal Edison Hits One Million Smart Meters Installed
Southern California Edison said Monday that it has installed its one millionth smart meter, eleven months after the firm started installing the meters in its territory. The electric utility said that it started installing smart meters starting in September 2009, with a plan to install five million smart meters for both residential and small business customers by the end of 2012. AnaptysBio Gets $1.5M From DARPA
San Diego-based AnaptysBio announced this morning that it has received $1.5M in a contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The firm said the contract covers developing antibodies that could be used by the military in antibody-based biosensors, including those that can detect bioterrorist threats. Venture Capitalists Not Finding Funding, Either
The latest numbers released by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and Thomson Reuters shows that not only are startups finding fundraising tough--so are the venture capital firms who support those startups. According to Thomson Reuters and the NVCA today, thirty-eight U.S. venture capital firms raised $1.9 billion in the second quarter of 2010, down 49 percent compared to Q1 this year, when 38 funds raised $3.7 billion. Circle Street Gets Funding From Crosscut Ventures
Los Angeles-based Circle Street, a new startup headed by Alex Nocifera, has raised a seed round of funding from Crosscut Ventures. Nocifera told socalTECH in an interview this morning that the funding is going towards building out the firm's product, which is aimed at helping merchants to easily publish promotions to targeted audiences through such things as location-based mobile and social applications. Nocifera was previously founder of Ripple TV. Amount of the funding was not disclosed.

Quest Software Buys Volcker Informatik
Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software said this morning that it has acquired German firm Volcker Informatik AG, a provider of identity management software. Financial terms of the deal were not disclose. Quest said that Volcker specializes in management of user identities, access privileges and security across multiple applications and systems.

Mogreet Names Two Execs
Los Angeles-based mobile video marketing firm Mogreet announced today that it has hired Scott Rogers as Vice President of Sales and Brand Solutions, and promoted John Allen to Vice President of Entertainment Sales. The firm, which is venture backed by Ascend Venture Group, Black Diamond Ventures, DFJ Frontier and Spyglass Ventures, is run by James Citron. Soliant Energy Gets UL Listing
Monrovia-based Soliant Energy, which develops concentrating photovoltaic solar energy systems, said today that the firm's flagship product, the SE-500X, has received UL listing from Underwriters Laboratories. Irvine Scientific Opens Second Facility In Japan
Santa Ana-based Irvine Scientific, a developer of medical devices for the cell culture and biopharmaceutical industry, said this morning that it has opened up a second facility, in Tokyo, Japan. The firm said the new facility will manufacture its cell culture media for production of biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies. Ace Metrix Names Chief Revenue Officer
Los Angeles-based Ace Metrix, which operates an online service which measured the effectiveness of television advertising, has snagged a new executive from comScore, INc. According to the firm, it has named Jack Flanagan as Chief Revenue Officer, who will be based in New York City. MRV Wins BBC
Chatsworth-based MRV Communications, a developer of optical networking hardware, said today that it was selected by the BBC, for transporting high definition video between temporary studio locations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. MRV said the BBC used its TereScope 5000/G products, a free-space optical system which provides Ethernet service. WiSpry Wins Smart Antenna Project
Irvine-based WiSpry, a developer of RF semiconductors, said today that it is a part of a team that has won an $8M contract being funded by Denmark's High Technology Foundation.
