Qualcomm Launches Second Annual Venture Competition
San Diego-based Qualcomm said Tuesday that it is launching its second annual venture investment competition, the Qualcomm Ventures QPrize competition. According to the firm, this year's competition will provide up to $750,000 in seed funding to entrepreneurs working on mobile ventures. Qualcomm said the deadline for business plan submissions is December 14th, and that it will select six finalists each from North America, Europe, China, South Korea, Israel and India. Microsemi Buys VT Silicon
Irvine-based Microsemi, a manufacturer of analog and mixed signal integrated circuits, said today that it has acquired all of the assets of VT Silicon. VT Silicon, based in Atlanta, is a developer of radio frequency integrated circuits (CTI) for the mobile wireless broadband market. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. Microsemi said the buy would allow it to offer "innovative, highly-integrated" front-end modules to its customers.

BridgeCo Wins Pioneer
El Segundo-based BridgeCo, a developer of media processors used for the home music market, reported today that it has been chosen by Pioneer, the maker of consumer electronics, for a new line of home audio products. BridgeCo said that Pioneer will integrate new networking features into its lineup based on BridgeCo's silicon, including in Pioneer's SC line of A/V receivers. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed.

Hulu Pumps Fall Premieres
Los Angeles-based streaming media site Hulu said today that it is launching its third annual, Fall Premiere effort which will highlight online premieres of primetime television shows. The site said it will show premieres of shows like Glee, Family Guy, Modern Family, Fringe, 30 Rock, House and The Apprentice, with a calendar of the various premieres.

BUMP.com Launches Text Messaging Service For Drivers
San Diego-based Bump.com, a new startup headed by former Active Network co-founder Mitch Thrower, said today that it has launched a new service which allows drivers to send voice, text, and email messages too people based on their license plate numbers. According to Bump.com, it has an iPhone application which allows users to send messages to any driver it sees, via voice or by text, given only the license plate of that driver. San Diego-based Advanced Telemetry, the developer of smart energy management systems headed by Guz Ezcurra, said today that it has been selected by General Electric Co. Zumbox Ties With Bill Printing Software Firm
Westlake Village-based Zumbox, the online postal mail startup headed by John Payne, said this morning that it has partnered with Crawford Technologies, a provider of software used by companies to print large quantity of bills. According to Zumbox, they have linked to make it easy for print service providers and large mailers to provide digital delivery via Zumbox. SG Biofuels Confirms $9.4M Fundraising
Encinitas-based SG Biofuels, a firm developing biofuels crops based on Jatropha, confirmed today that it has raised $9.4M in a Series A financing. The firm said the funding came from Flint Hills Resources, Life Technologies, and existing investors. SG Biofuels said the new funding will go towards advancing Jatropha as a high yield, low cost feedstock for diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemicals.
